That must have been awhile ago...  It's been quite a few years since it was good.  We have way to many west coast immigrants.

Found a cool website.  You can check your state.
https://poweroutage.us/area/state/texas

And, I'm working on fixing our power issue.

The only real problem we are having right now is economics - and virtually none of this is really the grid.

We don't get hard ice storms often.  It is/was cheaper to hang wires than bury them.  People wanted cheap - and that is what they paid for.  They don't want to pay extra for constant tree trimming, not to mention it is ugly.  So for a lot of areas, the trees have not been trimmed aggressively either - money and looks.  I live somewhat rural, we might have some fucked up looking trees, but they tend to be trimmed aggressively.  It has been a long time since we lost power due to ice.  We have plenty of land, so we have plenty of trees - so we either trim aggressively or cut the bastards near the power line down.  Get into a denser town, less free land, trees are closer to power lines or they simply don't have trees.

But the other issue is the ice formation is apparently localized this time.  I have been sitting with a 32 degree low this whole time, have not seen any freezing.  My dog kind of hated me last night though.  My dog woke me up at 3:30 wanting to go out.  I put him out, and put on noise cancelling headphones (I was going to leave him out for at least 30 minutes so he did would not want to go out again before morning (he has a thick winter coat, does not mind playing in the cold for a bit).  I did not hear the rain start.  Damn he was wet when I let him back in.  I gave him a good towel down, and I don't think he has ever been happier for my attention.

Hogs have been acting irregular through this whole storm.  Have seen them out in the open in the day several times.

Bluebonnet Coop don't play that. We have ugly chopped up looking trees anytime they get near a powerline. They're hell on trees. Our power also hardly ever goes out.

This is not a power grid issue. There is more than enough power being produced to meet demand. The local problems are from things like branches falling and taking out power lines

Nice redirect.

I don’t blame the governor for any of it. I blame the power companies for not maintaining the lines properly including trimming the trees back aggressively.

But many people do blame the government when shit like this happens. And they use it.

But keep your head buried in the sand.

Speaking of wrong numbers.

One of my duties at work is answering after hours telephone calls for animal control.  Unfortunately, the name of my city matches a City in Nevada and people OFTEN Google the city's name and animal control and click the first telephone number they see without noticing it's a different state.

My first month on the job and someone said there was a stray dog passing xyz casino.  I told her I lived here several years and while I have not been on every street, but I certainly had never seen a casino before .  I asked her if she knew she was calling Texas and she apologized and hung up.

Exactly. There are multiple ways to failure. The Icepacolypse never should have happened and was brought about by bad policy as much as anything. The ice storms are a different issue and unless people want to pay to have the power companies bury all the lines, are just one of those things they'll have to deal with. Same as Hurricane outages, it's not really the power companies fault with most hurricane outrages, because you cant or it's too expensive to bury all the lines. Relying on solar power in winter is a travesty that should have had people strung up for the deaths that resulted from invariable outcome.

I claim it is not a grid issue - but that is because who pays for tree trimming.  The electrically companies (the grid) tends to trim aggressively.  But once you get to the final mile, the cities tend to be tasked with trimming.  They often do not trim aggressively.  To that in part it is the home owner's fault.  They bitch when the city makes their trees fugly.  At one point, they were too fucking cheap to bury their lines or to buy houses with large enough lots to actually have room for both the power lines they needed and the trees they wanted.

I can not make bets, but I also bet that higher end newer neighborhoods (last 30 years of construction), have underground utilities.  Cheaper subdivisions (both older, and current) opted for cheaper above ground utilities.
---
My new house site is more than 100 yards from the grid poles - I am seriously going to consider burying those 100 years.  The my utility had a 50 yard right of way - it does not let anything get over 10' in that 50 years - generally by spraying the living fuck out of it with herbicide every 10 years.

Here in Georgia we lose power to ice storms every few years. 1 day to 2 weeks. A few  years ago the power company hired a tree service to aggressively kill/cut anything close to a power line. Way more than their regular trimming. But we really haven't had a bad ice storm since. Neighbors Leyland Cypress grew up through the powerline. They finally cut it down completely.  Neighbor not happy. Oh well.
