I have seen a few of these around. I can't understand why somebody would carry one. Is this just some kind of novelty item?

Bad, bad idea, IMO. They corroborate the claims of anybody who says you claimed to be a cop.

It MIGHT give you the extra second to not get shot, if police arrive while you are holding a perp at gunpoint, and they otherwise might mistake you for the bad guy.  It also MIGHT get you a felony charge for impersonating a peace officer.

When I received my FL. CWP, there was brochure included in the packet. This brochure offered a black leather wallet and CWP badge for $75. I laughed!

It seems some folks like the idea of having a badge to go along with the newly elevated status.

I think it's a rouse by FDLE to get CWP holders to flash their badge during moments of crisis.
I'm sure folks have used that badge to intimidate or misrepresent themselves as a LEO.

It's designed for people with delusions of grandeur, or a tiny little penis.

impersonating a peace officer

It's just a misdemeanor here....problem is
In the cities near me like Richmond, being a cop in a high crime area is just like being paid to be the moving target holder.
Bad idea.

I was a little bit put off by them. I got a catalog from NIC LE Supply with the idea of getting a novelty badge made for my own amusement. I was thinking of having it say "Counter Terrorist Death Squad" or something like that. I sure as hell wouldn't take it outside my house. I was a bit surprised that someone would even make a CCW badge. Doesn't seem to serve any purpose, except to intimidate people.

We had a guy like that in the small town of St.Croix Falls Wi, he was kind of a dim whitted fellow.

He always followed the fire trucks around when they got a call.

I have heard of two applications where one MIGHT be useful....

Case of concealment that may not be absolute - IE a long shirt over FBI carry that might flip up in the wind.  Wear the badge next to the firearm.  Most sheeple will see the badge and assume that the person is a LEO and not make a "man with a gun" call.  When sheeple see a badge, they assume "cop".  When sheeple see a gun w/o badge they assume "evil monster out to destroy the world".

Case of use of firearm in self defense.  Badge held high may make responding LEO's less likely to shoot you and public more likely to get out of the way and respond in the way you need them to.  BUT - do not at any time say POLICE other than advising someone to call 911 if you cannot do so yourself.

I have seen a lot of debate about both of these points.

Quick funny story:

Pull POS car over for some chippy deal.

Me: License, reg, insurance

Him: I forgot my wallet. Can I give you my BPSST number?
(BPSST is our certification bureau for for public safety. If you have a BPSST number, you are most likely LE)

Me: Oh, you a cop?

Him: (proudly) No, I'm a security guard.

Me: Hmm, might want to just keep that to yourself....

This pretty much somes up the reccomendation/reason given by a Texas DPS CHL officer "to carry" a CHL badge, when this question came up at my CHL Instructor's Class. Made good sense to me and has stood me in good stead the 2 times I had perps (car-thieves & wife beater) on the ground when the HPD arrived.

While they initially "thought" I was HPD, that was the first thing I told them at the time "I wasn't" and none of them had a problem w/ it. FWIW, while badge was shown upon their arrival, both firearm and badge were out my hands before the first officer exited his shop.

As the DPS guy stated, in an afterdark encounter, they have NO CLUE what's actually happening when they roll up, but in both my instances "I was the first person they talked to", which is what you want to have happen. That way the perps on the ground get to spout their lies and have their say after you have told them what really happened.

Note: using the badge for/or other than the manner described above can cause problems and get ya charged...., it might also get ya killed, in the wrong instance if a perp mistakes ya for an LEO, while he's in the commission of a crime. (in both my examples, I only showed the CHL badge to the first responding officer, the perps never saw it, as they were face to the asphalt) Mr. DPS officer suggested it only be used in the manner described and in that roll I'd say it worked exactly as he described it would.

Something to think about......, if your the type of individual who doesn't fear "getting invloved" and possesses "good judgement", as most could care less what happens to others or other's property as long as it doesn't affect them, I fully understand the comments above.

Don't beat your wife in front of me or try to steal my neighbor's car otherwise I'll get to use the badge again when they show to take your abusive/thieving ass to jail too......

www.stopsexoffenders.com/childsafety/articles/childsafetyarticles11.shtml

Further, it is common knowledge among law enforcement that most child molesters have used "authority lures" at one time or another, by which they falsely represent themselves as figures of authority such as policemen or security guards. Using this lure they convince the child that they must come with them. Along with a blue car, they often own uniforms or at the very minimum a blue shirt and pants, and almost all abductors/molesters carry a fake badge.

www.ktk.ru/~cm/molester.htm

Abductors often use uniforms and badges of authority to convince a child to go with them, using statements such as "your parents have been in an accident and you are wanted at the hospital."
