OH NOOOOO no such thing as BUIS.

Add about 3 seconds (too long) to clean the glass in between.

The irons on my Production gun failed not too long ago.

Shoot enough and you’ll see lots of irons fail.

Rear sights get plugged too, now what?

If you’re in that much shit (hand to hand with a bad guy) you point/contact shoot him down, clean the lens off and keep on keeping on.

I actually had my irons fail this past week shooting, filed too much of the dove tail off the rear sight. My RMRCC was working perfecting tho.

Installed new irons and properly fitted them a few days ago.

I have also seen front sights on Glocks fly off

Is it also blocking the irons?

I'm sure you'll say yes, so screw it, I'll just use the window as a big ass ghost ring.

Are there ways they can fail? Yep. Same with irons.

This same argument could be made against rifle optics.

However, the United States Military has been heavily engaged in infantry centric warfare throughout the third world for about two decades using rifles almost entirely equipped with optics and this hasn’t been a concern.

Why?

Two things:

1) I can still be effective with that. Dot is visible. BUIS are visible.

2) Don’t buy a meme-grade optic so it doesn’t do that.

Remember when half of arfcom believed in .40 and 9mm was a pussy round
Remember when most of arfcom predicted the 19x would fail to sell, or that the 42 was stupid and the R51 was the pistol to go with (released at the same time)
This place isnt really good at predicting firearms trends.

It could be a massive fad/boutique thing (like .40) or it could be here to stay and morph into various subforms and camps (like optics on rifles)

I'd like to think we are still in the "development" phase and we could see in the future:
1) pistol dots that better integrate into the slide, or non-reciprocating slides, or at least a single mounting system (right now this whole jumbled propietary plate/mounting standards is a bit annoying.  Plates suck.
2) more recticle innvoation, the ACSS Vulcan proved you can really enhance recticle choice beyond just a dot.
3) closed emitter, but without the massive mailbox form factor (maybe holo)
4) mounting more in-line with sights, right now we are in the "carry handle" phase where we dont have a uniform mounting standard (like flatop pic rail) and are just bolting on to exsiting uppers (slides) w/o regard to optimal Sight Height
5) better development of fiber/recharge/solar/battery backup (and jesus some more damn innovation from not-china)
6) QD, to get the thing off if it shatters/clogs and irons can be used quickly and unobstructed.
7) maybe integrated-into-slide popup/popdown... fixes potential holster issues
8) better auto brightness adjust, (looking ahead), maybe it can detect when WML is activated and adjust brightness up accordingly (like some car radios do when you go faster)

I like RDS and that is what I carry.

But what others do doesn't matter...

87% of them are willing to vacation where they can't carry anyway.

A bunch of others have psychic ability and only carry when they "feel the need".

Haha yeah, I suspect 90% of posters only "weekend carry" at best (most of us got no-carry jobs, either of the fired or arrested if caught variety).
(ps this has got to be the best thing about Working at Home... get to carry everyday without worried about getting fired)

I just seriously doubt people carry fully loaded stacattos with dots and reloads in appendix every day day in and day out.

Something something 365-in-your-pocket something something the .45 you left at home.

This past week I wore my g17 with RMR in a Trex arms ragnarok (which is a holster where the optic is completely exposed to the elements) all day every day.

I cut down trees, dug ditches with shovels and pickaxes, and did some shooting in mist and rain all with the gun on my belt.

Both days after the ditch digging I was able to run my fingers through my hair and dirt would fall out all over.

In all of these activities with an exposed muh open emitter optic there was only a few times (4-6) where debris found it’s way into the optic. All of these times I drew the gun and the debris fell to the bottom and the dot was still able to be acquired, a simple blow and it went out.

With the mist and rain the dot was still visible 100% of the time and with both eyes open presented no issue. But a simple wipe with my finger would remove the large droplets.

The muh open emitter meme is overstated. For a conceal carry gun where the optic is protected by clothing or for a gun where the optic is shrouded… I don’t think it really matters. But if you’re worried get a Aimpoint Acro or something

My eyes can still pick up irons fast… but I see the writing on the wall and have seen guys in my age bracket at training classes either praising their red dots for helping them get good hits, or planning on getting their slides cut for a red dot going forward.

I’ve got a couple RDS pistols and am working on getting better with them.

I hope so, I'm all about innovation, but irons-only pistols are absolutely not going away anytime soon (maybe they will in 10 years, but for now theres definetely use cases for irons-only-pistols)

Incidentally, I shoot both and enjoy both for varying different tasks.

Sure does. The military doesn't know what it's doing. It should have been a Glock with RMR.
