I had a crash at my airport this morning. Experimental 1/4 scale F-4U was doing taxi tests and he lost directional control, departed the runway to the left (west) side, hit a directional sign and flipped over onto its back. Pilot was concsious when we got there, but was banged up. Its a shame because he had been working on it for several years, doing some engine work, installing speed brakes, etc... Anyway, fire and rescue extracted him, taking him to the hospital, where he was later released. This amazes me because of how violent the wreck was. He must have been going around 40 when he flipped. The tail was smashed. No fire, no fuel leak, all in all he was very lucky. All this time the airport was closed, so we had about 5 airplanes circling overhead for an hour waiting to get in. One was a King Air carrying the president and other executives of the company the Corsair pilot works for. When the President found out he was ok, he cancelled his tee time and took it for himself! |

Last sumer I watched a powered glidered make a fatel turn back to the runway, stall and crash into an orchard. I actually seen him make a turn and have flown into the local airport enough to know the approaches to both 25 and 7 and told my partner that he looked like he was in trouble. I looked away and he was gone. About 2 minutes later it came over out radio that a glider had crashed. The pilot died on scene. At least this guy survived. CH |
