Lets say I became a Navy SEAL after high school. And lets say by that time our standard issue rifle is the XM8.Well,since I would be SF,would I get to choose whatever weapon I wanted to use(rifles, not bazookas and stuff like that)? To make the question simpler,do SF soldiers get to choose the weapons they use in missions?Me and my friends have been wondering this. Thanks,Tyler |

I didnt say I was joining. My friends dont want to either.Well,I'm going into the military after I get out of school, either marine corp or into BUD/s.Havent decided yet.I was just wondering. So,if you were the rifleman you could choose any kind of assault rifle(FAMAS,M4A1,AUG,etc...)? P.S.If I dont go into BUD/s instead of the marines, it wouldnt be because I could choose my weapon. |

| Let's say you finish high school first son, get good grades, be a good leader, stay in shape, be motivated and patriotic. Join the USN afterwards, show that you can handle the hardships that the military will gladly serve you in big, giant servings.........then the Navy SEALs might consider you. Hoo-Yah! |
| Jeez.I ask one simple frickin question and all I get is sarcasm and people calling me stupid. Will anyone answer my original question cause i cant find it anywhere.Thats all I want to know.I though this might be the place to come for help but I guess I was wrong...... |
There, added emphasis and fixed it for you. Seriously, everybody and their brother want to be a SEAL so you have to be the best of the best to even be considered for the program. That.. and your CO has to like you enough to recommend you for it (at least that's how a lot of the programs work in the USMC). Same thing for Force Recon and USMC Sniper. Trust me, I know this from experience... take it one step at a time or you may find yourself ending up very disappointed. |

Don't be so naive, this is the internet. Sarcasm and insults are what people do best here. Within the sarcasm and insults lie your answer, my son. Perhaps you should word your questions differently if you don't like the answers. |
actually i think the Navy offers a SEAL challenge program now (similar to the Army's new SF option) you can try out right after you finish basic, of course if you fail, they get to send you wherever they want. |

"everybody and their brother want to be a SEAL so you have to be the best of the best to even be considered for the program." I disagree, unless things have changed in 10 years, someone should be able to enlist right into the divefare program with a guarantee for BUDs, with an unassigned seal source code, of course they have to make the training, but the contract is a guarantee they'll have the opportunity. Don't know the answer to the question about the weapons. |
Ok, here is what I know. Seals teams do have a weapons locker, with a variety of weapons. Don't recall what exactly, but it runs the gamut of sub-guns to assault rifles to battle rifles (one each). They are usually standard across the board, i.e. all members have MP5s, M4s, M14s, etc. I only know from people I know that were on the teams a while a ago, not current info or from experience. W/ weps like the AUG and FAMAS, you may train on them, especially in Army SF, but they are not really in the military inventory, so chances are small you will use one operationally. Has to do with logistics: spare parts and repair, commonality, etc. DELTA Force has team armorers that will customize weapons to the operators specs, and I think they get some wild shit. But don't quote me on that. If you really want to know, go for it. You have nothing to lose, just keep your expectations realistic. |
That's okay. We are used to it from kids. BTW, see that space bar at the bottom of your keyboard? The long bar?? Please hit it one time after each comma and twice after the end of a sentance. It will make your posts MUCH easier to read and we won't have to call you a dumbass any more. SGtar15 |
Is it really that hard to be a sniper? I thought it was a lot about how calm you were and how good a shot you were, like when you qualify? Sniper school is a different story but I mean just getting recommended for it. |
Look dude, you have to get out of HS first. You don't just stroll on down to BUDS and breeze through. It is ALOT of work to get into the Teams and even more work to stay in. Quit worrying about weapons and gear and shit. Only thing on your mind should be pushups, situps, LOT's of running and swimming. If you aren't a good swimmer, then become one. Having said all of this, it doesn't sound like you want it too bad and you definatley need some maturing before you can hope to achieve such an undertaking. |
| I would imagine so. You have to be both smart and very patient. Not too many people have that combo. I could not stay put for more than 10 minutes without getting bored out of my mind and antsy. I could not imagine laying up for hours or days waiting for my target to show. |

If I had to do it over, while the divefare program is a guarantee, as mentioned if you fail you could potentially end up anywhere in the navy doing anything. That said, if i had to do it over again, I would enlist into the navy as a corpsman, medic. That's highly desired rate for SEAL teams, and you'll be able to try out for BUDs during bootcamp by taking the BUDs physical. If you make that, then you'd go from boot camp to A school, then to BUDs. If you fail the test during boot camp you still go to corpsman A school, then are assigned somewhere as a corpsman, and can try out for the SEALS again. If for some reason you fail to either make it to BUDs or fail out of BUDs, then you always have the option of applying for the school that will qualify you to serve with marine units as a combat medic. You really can't go wrong with all of those options. |
| I do want to be in the military though. I cant think of a better job. I exersise after school (lift weights), I am a good swimmer, and am good at running. I know it is hard to get through.I've seen the stuff they have to do and it is intense. Now, back to the original question. So,pretty much M4s,MP5s,M14s and M60/M249 right?Oh,and what is SOCNET? |

To try and answer crazyquik's question - Being a good shot and being a good sniper are almost two different things actually. I know a lot of snipers that are great at stalking and poor at camouflage, great at camo (but bad at shooting), great at shooting, but their spotter has to judge the distance for them... it goes on and on. It is surprising at how many successful snipers are math whiz's, great at judging distance, wind direction and speed and on top of that could probably run a goddamned deer into the ground and strangle it to death (they're that fit). It really does take a certain kind of person to be good at it, but if you're determined, disciplined and motivated enough you can become that type of person. |

What is Socnet? Tread lightly if you're sensitive to criticism. Mike |
