Martha Stewart is convicted of Federal crime(s).

She is subsequently sentenced to Federal Prison time for those crime(s).

Why is she walking the street?

Because she's not a flight risk.  She'll be scheduled to report to the country club prison at a certain date/time and she'll walk up to the door and check in like she's going to the spa.  That's how is works for those white-collar criminals

Federal laws must be different than state laws.

State you get convicted and sentenced, you can appeal, sure, but you appeal from the pokey.

Aim4MyHead..........no I don't understand the money thing. Would you be kind enough to explain how it all fits into the grand scheme of life/politics/etc.?

Even lots of "blue collar" criminals get time before they have to report to prison if they are not considered a flight risk.  The movie "25th Hour" is about this very thing.  I knew plenty of guys back in the day that walked out of the courtroom after felony convictions (figuratively) and then simply reported to the prison on the appropriate date.  Typically you get 24 hours (hence the name of the movie above) to get your shit in order.

Incidentally, you guys should really dig into the Martha Stewart thing and understand what exactly it is they are accusing/charging/convicting her of.  Scary shit.  I'd like to see the silly bitch do some time purely out of jealous vindictiveness just like the rest of you, but the fact remains that these charges are bullshit.

Wise man, that norman74.  The prosecutotr couldn't convict her of insider trading, so they charged her with doing what Bill Clinton got away with (lying), but managed to get her convicted by the jury of insider trading.
