The "Shorty AK" is without a doubt the loudest most piercing rifle out there. Your shooting buddies will not like it! That pronounced high freq pop goes right through me. A .50 may technically be louder, but it is nowhere near as annoying.

Dude, it looks totally cool at night.
With that said, never shoot it w/o hearing protection. If WWIII would have happened, we would have won because the Russkie infantry would all have been deaf. It is also totally unnecessary. |

The Bushmaster 16" A2 with the AK break is good to go. It shoots well fast. There is a huge fireball that is seen when you are firing the rifle. I personally have one and love it. $750 isn't too bad. I am sure if you get one you won't regret it. By the way I own a preban rifle as well and like the AK style muzzle break. Bushmaster also has a Y comp break and it works pretty good.

I own 3 Bushmaster's with the Bushmaster AK brakes on all of them. I think this brake is the best one that I have tried to date. It is no louder than any other brake out there, and in my opinion reduces muzzel flip and felt recoil better that any other muzzel brake that I have tried. Muzzel brakes in general make muzzel flash then they suppress it. Although ammo selection can play a part in this. The IMI ammo has flash retardant in the powder and this helps a lot with the flash. I think the price is right, here in Colo the price for the same weapon is in the mid $800 range. I like Bushmaster and would say that you can't go wrong with this package. Got one on a 14.5" barrel.
Q1. Do they suppress flash at all, have no effect, or amplify it? A1. They better not suppress the flash at all or will all be sending our rifles back like the DSA STG-58 Kit rifles. Q2.What recoil reduction to they produce, and is it worth it? A2. The recoil from the .223 is pretty light but the muzzle flip can be a bit. My rifle with the AK wears a 3x scope and the AK brake does a good enough job that I can see the bullet impact the target. Q3. Does the break make the weapon louder, and if so how much? A3. Technically it doesn't make it any louder it redirects some of the energy (expanding gases) off to the sides. Tests have shown a 9 dB increase with some brakes, the AK would be one of the loudest. Q4. Is $750 a good price for one of these, new? A4. Yupp, not bad at all. |

The AK-74 "STYLE" muzzle brake was $25 the last time I looked in my Bushmaster catalog.
What is a reasonable charge to have it soldered on? |

I dont know too much about the AK brake, but do NOT get the Mini Y-Comp. It is LOUD and has a 15' wash on both sides of you. It also sends a shockwave back at you. The ar-15 doesn't kick/flip that much anyways, and these brakes only do a tad of muzzle control. I am about to replace my 14.5 + mini y comp barrel and get a 16" M4 w/out the brake. I may get the Wilson Combat A2 brake later, but not now.

OH PLEEEASE, It's a high power rifle, It's gonna go BANG!!That bang is loud, so wear your hearing protection and stop whining! I have a Bushy shorty with the AK break and have had no complaints or even dirty looks at any range I have shot at. It also sounds no louder to me than a plain or suppressed muzzle.

When I purchased my last Bushmaster back in Feb I was going to get the YCOMP and after talking to the guys at Bushmaster they advised me to get another AK brake and that it was far superior to the YCOMP. As far as the Wilson brake, I had one, make the rifle look cool, but seemed to jerk the muzzel. I ended up having it cut off and installed a Smith Ent brake (the one that has the 3 holes in the side, Bushmaster sells it) Even the AK brake works better than the Smith Ent brake, although I would recommend the Smith Ent brake. [heavy] BUTKUS, try sitting NEXT to someone shooting one and you will change your tune. I have the AK shorty also and have "heard" that you dont need one on a .223, well I can tell you this after getting my "16 Vmatch I was surprised at how much of a difference there was in the mussel jump, the AK brake is smooth as silk to rapid fire, loud as hell, but works great. |

the ak brake ain't shit for noise. Try on the armalite factory brake if you want to clear off the range.

How 'bout NO BRAKE?
It makes for easy cleaning and doesn't "enhance" the flash with the right ammo. And the noise goes straight out, rather than back at you or to the sides. There's some good info on this at snipercountry.com. |

A Miculek or JP is louder than any of the others (I think due to the large surface areas). One to think about is the Levang Linear comp. Its only available pre-ban, but you could have it silver soldered on. Hard to describe. Look at it on the DPMS site.
