I have a large Live Oak that has to be cut down.  The tree guy wants an extre $50 to grind the stump.

I recall reading about some chemical that you pour on the stump and it basically burns the thing up.  Even the underground roots.

Anybody have any idea what I'm talking about?

If so, does it work and work well?

Maybe it works better in an area with more humidity, but it didn't work well at all for me here in western CO.  I ended up paying to have the stump of a huge globe willow ground down anyway.

You can also just drill a bunch of 1/2" holes into the top of it. With time the water will collect in the holes and rot the stump. OR, just get a stick or two of dynomite and have some fun.

The chemical stump killer will take a long time and multiple reapplications.

Pay the extra $50, but tell him you want it under the finished grade.

Stump Out

The best way ever to get rid of unwanted, unsightly tree stumps. Powerful mix-and-pour formula decomposes wood fiber, preparing your stump for easy removal or burning.

sounds like you still will have to remove it.

While I posted the link, I am with SHIVAN on this. $50 to the stump grinder is quicker and easier in the long run.

It all depends on how patient you are , chemical decomposers take a year or more .
Stump grinding is instant . Not to mention $50 is a good deal .

And when you grind it out be sure you get all the chips raked up.

Dad had a couple of tree stumps ground up when I was a kid. You could always tell where the trees were because of the mushrooms.

Okay, maybe they weren't that type but the wet ground and wood chips made a good base for mushroom growing.

Excellent idea... I used the "stump remover" years ago - took years and it was only a 10" diameter stump about 10" high. $50 worth every penny!

You could do what my uncle had me do one time.  He told me to go down to the Co-Op and pick up 2 cases of dynomite and blasting caps, and after I got back he told me to blast that stump outta his corn field.  Well I took a stick and cap, shoved it under a root, and ran.  The resulting hole in the ground was just big enough for the rest of the dynomite.  I got the bright idea to shove the rest under there and wire it to blow.  Set a 5 min fuse and hauled ass back to the porch.  My cousin and I are sitting on the back porch having a drink then my uncle came out and yelled at us that we were supposed to be out there pulling the stump.  I looked at my watch and told him anytime now it should be up.  Just as I said that, we saw this huge geyser of dirt out in the field.  We found the stump about 100 yds from its orignal spot.  No more running to the Co-Op for dynomite anymore.
sorry my spelling sucks, I just woke up.
