I enjoy all of them. Some more than others, but I've binged the whole set multiple times.

I like the 3rd one a lot more than most people.

OP, did you watch the first movie in the theater when it first came out. Did you see the second one tripping balls in a elaborate college theater with friends cheering for the marines. Yeah, I didn't think so. The first two Alien movies are anything but lame. Maybe you missed out on such an awesome movie going experience and that is why you feel that way.

In 1979 a friend told me about Sigourney Weaver in undies at the end of this Alien movie. Back then that was a bigger deal. Now, being R rated it was a challenge to see this movie but I was not dissapointed. I was taken to the second one and the entire theater was rooting for the marines. Something I'm not sure a theater would let you do today without pissing off a "Karen".

Came back to add that back then the only way to see movies like that was in the theater. People used to say how many times they saw a movie as a way to give it stars today. Star Wars (original movie) was king in that regard.

Bill Paxton RIP, and a Preditor killed you and a Terminator killed you. Bill Paxton is a movie hero. BTY Sigourney Weaver is just as hot in 1979 as she is today. You missed out OP....

She has a lot of weakness.

The plot doesn't make her eventual success ABOUT her being a woman.  She just happens to be a woman.  There are plenty of other women in both of the first movies - and they die like flies.  There's nothing special about them being women (either on the Nostromo crew or in the Colonial Marines), and nothing really separates them from the men that are also dieing like flies.

The only "woman" subtext in either movie is that her motherly instincts (and her grief over her dead daughter) is part of what drives her to protect Newt in the second movie.  Other than that, her being a woman is pretty irrelevant to the movie.

I always felt like a woman was chosen for the first one because she seemed more vulnerable and created more tension.  I don't think having Tom Skerritt as the only survivor would have created the same vibe.

First Alien was amazing. Chestburster rocked my 14yo world and Sigourney in her skivvies did the same. Feel sorry for whoever got my theater seat after that movie because I probably left 2-3 types of DNA samples. Aliens was awesome as well. Super intense with some humor thrown in. Loved them both

There is so much great about Alien other than the special effects and female protagonist.  As DKprof pointed out, the protagonist was really well done and not done purely for the sake of being a female.

The sound and ambience of the movie is perfect.  The way you barely ever see the full grown alien until the very end was masterful.  The cast pulled off their roles very well.  The writing was excellent.

I'd say the movie has aged just fine.  I think the problem with youth today is that they themselves have not aged well.  My step-daughter is in a stupid phase where she will only watch horror/scary movies and anything made before the iPhone was introduced, is stupid to her.

Well, you’re not utterly and completely wrong. Just wrong.

What has become the majority of the franchise does suck. You’re not wrong there.

Alien is great. You’re not wrong there.

While Alien was a thriller, maybe even “horror” depending on your definitions, Aliens was an action movie. While a different genre of movie, taking place in the same universe, it was still a great movie. If you were expecting suspense and jump scares, yeah it wasn’t going to live up to that. But it was a great movie. So you’re wrong there.

Alien and the sequel Aliens are superb for the genre. The subsequent movies that followers are horrible and just to make cash. The spin-off prequels Prometheus and Covenant were entertaining on their own but are horrible as additions to the story line in my opinion. They just don’t add much value to the story.

That's the thing. We have never complained about strong female leads. Tomb Raider, Eon Flux, Kill Bill, Underworld, Misery, Charlie's Angel, Erin Brockovich, Thelma and Louise, etc. There are tons. The problem is when Hollywood interjects all the other bullshit into everything, even when its not pertinent to the story. Ditto for remaking classics just to throw a bunch of bitches in there.

I don't even know what to say about Prometheus.  It was pitched as a prequel that would close the loop on the derelict on LV-426.  In reality it never did and it could have been a stand alone reboot.
Alien and Aliens DO NOT tie in with the events of Prometheus.  Different planet (LV-223) with the same Weyland-Yutani Company.  To me it seemed like a way for Sir Ridley to say F U to all other Alien movies after his.  On top of this it was a mess of a story and made little sense.  The Space Jockey was way more interesting and scary as the fossilized remains of a non-humanoid alien species from a zillion years ago, not the buff human "engineers."

They are not going to complete the story arc of Prometheus and Covenant so F U too.  A dead end and thankfully so.

Another thing, no matter what I'm an Alien fan and will watch any new movie in the franchise.  Take my money you bastards.
