I was wondering  what you guys have to say about windows. We have to replace all of our windows on the house because they are all original 1945 equipment. We plan on doing the installation ourselves. Any companies you highly recommend? any to really avoid?

We have the following  numbers of windows with rough openings of:

1X 29.5X39.25

2X 29.5X47

1X 25.5X47.125

7X 36X55.25

Got an estimate of approximately $3200 for  Superior Window Systems brand windows. Anyone ever use them?

Any ideas?

We had our windows replaced a few years ago. The guy that done it bought them from Alumaform. We got the windows installed for an average of $150.00 each. They were vinyl clad aluminum. Both sashes tilt in to clean them. We had 10 of them. He even hauled off all the old ones he took out.

There seem to be a lot of good regional window manufacturers.  I have Capitol, which I'm happy with.

There are certainly some big National ones, like Pella or Anderson, as well.

Just do some shopping, use your best judgement.

My brother has a house in old sac that's well over 40 years old.  When he was shopping around for new windows to replace the counter weight vertical sliders in is house he found a guy that reconditions existing windows.  Needless to say my brother is very happy with the work and when the windows are closed it's quiet inside his house... I'd say his windows seal out the noise better then my doublepane alum windows in my crappy 8-year-old house.  I’ve been over and seen the work.  It’s real nice and everything looks brand new but still has the old feel like the rest of the house.

I don't know what kind of windows you have in your house or what's common for MN, but it's just another avenue that could save you lots of $

We don't know what's the rest of your house looks like. We don't know where your house is situated, how much light, your personal preference.

My grandparents live on a single row, meaning behind their backyard fence there's a 4 lane road. Cars coming back and forth at all times. They went with double pane windows for sound isolation and increased insulation that I wouldn't put on my parents house, because they live in a cul-de-sac, with quiet neighbors and pleasant weather.

I've put them in 2 houses, one brick veneer and one real brick.  It was easy to get them out of the brick house, but putting new ones in level was a PITA.  The brick veneer was exactly opposite.  If you plan on taking the old ones out yourself, buy a grinder and a sawzall if you don't already have them.

Well, due to the cold I need windows with a decent insulation value to them. Low e glass and argon filling for instance. Sound isolation isn't  a real necessity. I guess I am looking for a decent quality window that has the insulation value I need and a price tag that wont kill me.

My parents have had terrible luck with Marvin windows. They leak, get moisture between the panes. Crank mechanisms go to hell. Bitches work in customer service dept.

We replaced three sliding glass doors, one 4X6 window, and five 2.5X2.5 "skylight" windows.  We bought Millguard from Home Depot.  They were of excellent quality and were pretty easy to install.
