Hope this isn't a dupe.  Thought it was pretty interesting.

I thought of that several years back when I was studying the mineral Ulexite.  Ulexite has fiber optic properties that make it almost translucent in one plane.  I was sitting in a cold, dark cinder block basement at the time and wondered why nobody put fiber optics in concrete to transmit light and save money on electricity.

I figured somebody else had already done that and went on with my work.

Speaking of Star Treck 4, I worked with the guy who was the whale consultant on the movie.  He was a former whale trainer at Sea World.

Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas...

Anyone familar with old wood and sail warships? I took Little Ramjet for a tour on the 20 gun, U.S. Brig, Niagara in Erie. PA over the 4th.

On the deck were imbedded poured glass prisms that did a remarkable job of lighting the crew quarters below deck which had a very low ceiling and cramped quarters. I thought that was a clever idea for 1812.

You know transparent aluminum has already been done right?

Sintered Alumina (alluminum oxide) produces this:

Far stronger than armored glass, they are working on how to make curved pieces of it now.

I'd never heard of that. Pretty cool. Now I'm picturing translucent scuba tanks, maybe with lights in them for night dives.
