so I just saw on the news that Seatle Washington was relaxing it's school's graduation standards. They are getting rid of the Math proficentcy test. The research paper and the literacy test. now all you need to graduate is a 2.0 GPA and 60 hours of community service. the Teachers are trying to get rid of the 2.0 GPA requirement stateing that it was unfair for colored students. |

I can't believe this. I graduated from Seattle's Public School system and I can tell you this: the HS diploma they gave me worths less than the toilet paper I used to wipe my ass with last night. In fact, I don't think that I HAVE my HS diploma (yes, I did graduate) and I don't care, that's how low I think about it. How did I managed to go through engineering school, I have no idea. I had to take remedial algebra classes in community college (Math 088 & 089, or something like that). Because of that, it took me two years longer to get my degree (couldn't take courses in engineering physics, chemistry, engineering fundamentals, etc because my math sucked when I got out of high school). And now they want to lower the standard even more? The 2.0 GPA is unfair to colored students? WTF? I was one of those "colored students" and my GPA was 3.5 (although with the mickey mouse courses I took, that 3.5 GPA certainly don't mean shit). And I didn't even study hard (hang out with the "rockers" throughout high school and lived the "dazed and confused" life style). |

This is just going to make the divide between the "haves" and the "have nots" that much greater. The haves pay the money and have the knowledge that a good education is critical to ensure the future of their children. The have-nots don't have an education and thus don't understand that an education for their children is the golden key. The worst are the "I didn't need no fancy education, so why does my kid?" Just make sure you are one of the haves. |

if they succeed in getting rid of the 2.0 GPA requirment then all that's need for graduation is 60 hours of comunity service. Arn't there some sentances for crimes that include or are comunity service. So just comit some minor crimes get sentanced to comunity service and graduate High school because of it. ![]()

Agreed. The best thing you could do for some kids is teach them a trade in high school so they can get a real job: welding, auto mechanic, computer repair, etc. instead of wasting money on an education they will never use. What is a kid with a IQ=95, no father and an alcoholic mother gonna do with "A Midsummer night's dream"? Give the kid some damn job skills, not a liberal arts education! And kids hsould be able to read when they graduate high school. It blows my mind that kids are allowed to graduate without the ability to read a newspaper. This is just another progressive step in the system failing. |
| Meanwhile, homeschooled children in my state have to be tested every few years, show logs of attendance and curriculum, and to get into college they have to take 4 of the SAT II subject tests. Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the responsibility for homeschooliing my boys, I just remind myself that I can't possible do any worse than the public schools. My 3 year old probably does more school work than most seniors in public school, and he actually enjoys it. |
