My friend left me with his malfunctioing computer while he went on his honeymoon.  It turns out he had a ton of viruses.  So many that it was just easier to reinstall Windows.

I've gotten XP installed and I go to get the updates.  They install fine until I get to the SP1 update.  At the end of the install I got a bluescreen.  I rebooted and reinstalled it again "successfully".  Ever since then, Windows update comtinues to think I don't have about 20 updates including SP1.  No matter how many times I install them and reboot, they're still listed.

So, I first tried to do a system restore to when XP first booted.  No dice.  I tried this several times and it tells me that the restore failed due to an improper shutdown or something like that.

Then, I tried reinstalling XP and the same thing happened all over again.

That leaves the question of:  HOW DO I FIX THIS?

Oh, all the updates and SP1 are listed in the add/remove hardware wizard.  And it does nothing when I remove them.

What does the bluescreen say?
It always states the cause of it somewhere in the
upper part of the screen.
It could be a hardware prob.

I think it said "Illegal operation" or something like that.

To read it again I'd have to reinstall windows.

Are you upgrading the software and then reinstalling the OS or reformatting the harddrive?
A lot of times a complete blow out of the HD is best.

Sounds like you need a wipe.

I've done that each time.

I started with a clean harddrive.  I installed XP.  Then I went to windows update and grabbed all the new stuff.

It got fuxored as I described above, so I did the same thing all over again.

Have someone put SP1 on a disc for you and install it that way instead of using the update

Sounds like bad RAM if this is from clean install.

Three Times.

This is complete fdisk/format of all drives (entirely clean), then a clean load from the XP CD gives you bluescreen?  (wanna make sure I am reading this right...)

Were there any BSD's before you reloaded?

I have a spare computer.  How do I get SP1 as a single file?

No.  Installing SP1 from Windows update gave me the bluescreen.

How did that hot rod computer you were building a while ago turn out?

Been through this a few times so I have a few suggestions.

1) Remove all non essential hardware.

2)Skip the small updates and jump to the SP and install that first then install the smaller fixes.

3)Use another machine to get all of the service packs/updates and burn a cd.  Use the cd to update the new system.

Good luck

Badass

Athlon 64 3400+, 2GB DDR400, 6x SATA 250gb Hitachi Deskstars (in RAID 1 config, so it's like I have 3 redundant 250's), 74gb WD Raptor, 600w PS, 12x DVD+-RW, 52x Plextor CD-RW.

It's fast as lightning.

I also built 2 more just like it but with only 2x 250gb deskstars.

How do I get the updates onto a CD?  Is there a place I can install them as individual files?

you need to d/l  to a seperate file using network d/l of sp1 (slipstream)

edit: only way I know how, anyone know a better way?

Before wasting any more time go get a copy of Memtest86 and test the RAM as brasspile suggested.

If it tests out ok do another clean install of windows and then download the full SP1 from Atencio's link and try installing it. You may even want to try from safe mode, but I'm not sure if it will install from there.

Bah.  I did all that.  Now my CD key doesn't work on it.  Actually, NONE of my working XP or XP sp1 serials work on the disk those instructions made.

It's always something.  *sigh*

well crap.  I have SP1A and the blaster patch on a CD.  If you want a copy I'll send you one.   File is too big unless someone has a FTP server or you wanna try to do it across MIRC.

Reinstall XP.

Download and install latest device drivers for all hardware from OEM sites.

Download and install SP1.

Run Critical Updates.

Run Office Updates (assuming it's installed).

Kick back and have a cold one.
