I've been using my Iron Man watch for many years now. It "takes a lickin and it keeps on tickin". I would like to however get a "medium speed" watch without spending $400. Any suggestions? Bomber |

Try a TRASER, not to expensive and very popular with our 'High Speed' guys here in the UK. www.traserwatchshop.co.uk/ |
Those a nice looking. I have had a Tag Formula for over 15 years and was thinking of replacing it. I'll have to look for a US source. Thanks. |
Ditto for me. I appreciate the link but I'm looking for a US source to avoid some of the S&H. Thanks! |
|
More info…… Details on US Military Suppliers www.army-technology.com/contractors/personal/mb_microtec/ SWISS Parents home page; www.traser-watches.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabId=5 Really wierd about them being so hard to source in the US, I can walk into two retailers within 10 miles and buy the real deal military issues watches… ![]() Andy |

This is the one that I use. There are a few on (cough, gag, cough) eBay right now, if you can stomach going over (hack) there and supporting those a$$es with their anti-gun fervor. |

I beat the heck out of watches. Luminox are junk. The dials fall off and the crystals crack. The warranty sucks. The bands suck. It cost me more to have a crystal replaced than the price of two G-shocks. Luminox are church and party watches, not for the operator or someone that really works hard. I wear G-shocks. I beat the heck out of them. They are impact resistant, chemical resistant, and magnetic field resistant. I average 4-5 years from them. Even the Ironman won't take a beating like a G-shock. My bro was burning 1 a year and now wears G-shock. Want to buy a Luminox for $40? The fricking yellow box is in beautiful shape....... |
Horsehocky...my Luminox has had the living shit beat out of it...I have never had a failure with it yet...it's dropped, smashed, slammed in doors, during my LE days it was pummled in fights with suspects, both on the street and in the jail, and never, not once, did it fail... Still wear it today...and it ain't at churchs or parties either... |
I'm not clear what you are saying here, are you saying that $400 is too much to pay for a watch, or are you saying that $400 watches are cheap, and a person should spend more than that to get a good watch? I may be slow, but the way you worded this confuses me. |
Sorry, but yes. There are price points for all things, much like my $40.00 bottle of wine comparison, there are no really good wines that woudl justify spending $40.00 for it, at the point of purchase, you are basically saying to yourself, "Well hell, it's $40.00, it has to be better than the $7.00 bottle sitting next to it". In reality, what you are paying for is the percieved value, the wiine that goes into both bottles are the same, the bottles are the same and the cork is the same. The label might have different wording on it, but in all liklyhood it was printed by the same printer. At $400.00 it is hard to get somethign of any better quality over a $20.00 timex. Move up to about 1k and you can get a watch that will alst forever and provide accurate timekeeping at the same time. But, there is the percieved value of the $400.00 watch, it might just fool the people you want to impress, but then again, it might not. |

I have a Pulsar Titanium Solar that I love. I wouldn't mind a newer Casio Solar though. If you did want to spend $395.00 I would look at these: www.specialopswatch.com

Sorry to say, a $400.00 watch is like buying a |
Dude, he watches the stock market on the flat panels while cruising the net on the bathtub... Not to mention the watch observation is bullshit to begin with... |
|
Watch values/Costs… depends on the need I suppose. When my life REALLY depended on it I wore my Omega Seamaster… the very best quality and utterly dependable… even survived being blown up along with me! I broke, the watch didn't, but it did cost $2000+ My everyday wear is a Seiko SNA027P Chronometer, cost @ $175, less than a tenth of the Omega, tell's the time just as good, tough as old boots. If I was in a SHTF situation I would want my Omega on my wrist, but I ain't so the Seiko does just fine. Andy |

Didn't really ask for all that. I was looking a watch to replace a Ironman that has been through a ton of shit. I have expensive watches and I wear them to church. I'm just looking for a simple recommendation for a medium speed watch that DOES NOT cost $400. Thanks to all those who kept the post positive and on topic. Bomber |
$11,000.00? <lol>, try again. |
Then do tell, prove me wrong. You may feel tha tthe quality of a cheap $400.00 watch is greater than a 20 timex, but it just ain't so. |
You might believe what you just wrote, but it is still incorrect. I don't know a lot about watches, but I do know MANY people that are into wine (including my parents, who tried to beat wine knowledge into my head during my entire childhood), and while I'm not a big fan of wine myself, these people - including my fiancee - know what they are talking about. (And I do know a LOT about port wine.) If you don't KNOW much about wine, you might be taken for a ride and overpay for cheap wine with a fancy label, but if you KNOW what you are buying, then there is a world of difference between a $7 wine and a $40. (That's not to say that a $400 wine isn't better - of course it is ... sorry 'bout the hijack. just wanted to clarify |
Note to self…… ditch the Seiko Chronometer (you know, the $175 one the Royal Navy pilots get as standard military issue) and buy a $20 Timex, apparently it's just a good…… and when I go back off leave, tell the Naval Stores guys to stop issuing Seikos, Traser's etc and buy Timex's and save the Taxpayer a fortune! I don't think so… Andy |
My dive watch was just around $400 - and I HIGHLY doubt that a can get a $20 watch that has a depth gauge, screw-down crown, ratcheting bezel, etc. |
I don't know about $400 watches, but you give a lot more credit to $20 timexs. I shoulda given up on them in HS, but it took 3 more to get it in my head. OTOH, I do agree with you about price points. I have yet to find a watch that is any better than my $150 Pulsar that costs less than a grand. |
I've had a Luminox for about nine years, wear it almost everday, gets banged around REAL good and is still ticking, hands and all |
+1 Luminox is crap. Mine fell apart as well. Customer service sucks. SEALSpecOpsRangerNinjas don't wear Luminox watches. It's all marketing BS. I wear a G-Shock. Hard to beat for the money. Timex makes a good watch for the money too. Seiko makes great dive watches on the cheap. I've had 'em all, and I prefer the Casio, YMMV. Most folks in the ninja business wear G-Shock or Suunto watches. I ain't no ninja, but I like a sturdy inexpensive reliable timepiece for knocking around. If you were in the market for a work of art, then all of the Breitling, Omega, Rolex comments would make sense. Great timepieces. But that dosen't sound like the case. I vote Casio. |
I just saw a traser light mentioned in another thread. Someone posted that the Traser light source was illegal to import into the US. Traser Retailers World Wide No US retailer listed. None in Canada or Mexico. So much for makin out on NAFTA

On the topic of dive watches (I know, nobody cares Waterproof to 11,100 meters !!! - that's something like 36 THOUSAND feet depth! The watch is guaranteed to be waterproof ANYWHERE on planet Earth, including the bottom of the Marianas trench - the deepest point on the planet (so when they recover your crushed corpse, your watch will still work). |

I do know something about watches. Heilo is overstating his comparrison, but he does have a point. There is little difference between a watch at $150 and $400 retail, at least as far as mechanical watches go. But there is a considerable difference between a watch at $150-400 and on at $1000, just as there is a considerable difference between watches at $1000 and $5000. Honestly, for the money, you cannot beat the accuracy of a quartz watch like a G-Shock if durability and accuracy are what you are concerned with. It'll likely hold up better than most affordable mechanical watches, be far more accurate/precise, and be easier to replace if need be. I'm in love with names like Concord, Omega, Rolex, Tag Heuer, Anonimo, etc. that I cannot readily afford. I usually wear a plain quartz watch for knocking around, or a Guess dress watch when I dress up. I'm hell on watches. Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |

my luminox is "ok". things I've encountered with it: sucked up water like a sponge at the local water park (warranty covered it)(took about a month) *supposedly was a crown "problem" on the earlier models ![]() one of the band pins broke the other day out in the field (luckily, I was able to get repaired.) setting the time / alignment with tic marks could be better, especially since they go out of the way to advertise it's "swiss". it does take a ass kicking and keep on going. it keeps ok time. I have encounered a problem where a particularly hard beating may cause the date to skip a day or two. they're great for reading at night, but at the same time, they stand out like a friggin beacon at night, especially if you're wearing NV. I like the active element on the second hand, so you can read it in the dark. I have nOT been lucky with timex watches at all. most leak or break on me pretty quick. I have an early G-shock watch from the 80's that still does the job, but features compared to newer ones, it's quite lacking. The watch I've been eyeing is the G-force with the solar cell built into it and/or the one that automatically adjusts itself to the atomic clock via WWVB. the watch in my unit that seems to be pretty popular is one of the Suunto watches (they're black and have a bubble on the crystal. I'm still shopping around for a 'good' one. I have noticed the Tissot "touch" watch, that's pretty cool, but not very 'tactical'. |
My watch is an Armitron that my honey gave to me about 4 years ago on my birthday. Keeps good time, and I get compliments on it. I've taken down thugs, fallen down and shattered my elbow, and the thing has never missed a tic. It's getting a little marred up, with a scratch in the crystal, but has lasted a lot longer than my $225 Seiko Titanium did. I do need something "medium speed" as well, which is why I'll probably go with that Marathon watch. I rather like having something that doesn't have me pay to advertise them! If it's good enough for the military, it must be good enough for me. At least that's what my Drill Instructor told me about 20 years ago. (Boots notwithstanding!)

| Funny, ever since I've owned a G-Shock, I never understood paying more than the 60 bucks I spent on it. Personally I don't trust my self with watches or sunglasses. They always get broken/lost. I still have my first G-Shock, the band broke and it doesn't beep anymore, but it still tells time (after a battery change. After the battery was dieining on that one, I went shopping for a new one (this was 4 years later even though the battery was suposed to only last 2 years). I found one at Macy's, but it was more "dressy" and had a black face that was hard to see without turning on the light. I went online and found one of the original styled ones for 40 bucks + shipping/tax. That was 3 years ago. I keep my "dressy" g-shock in my bag incase I leave my house with out a watch. (It's tough getting old) After the battery dies on this one, I may look into the solar powered one. |

Unless this Swiss Army Raider has already sold, I'd say it's a pretty good deal: www.knifeforums.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=424004&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=14&fpart=1 Good luck. |

I have to agree with wildearp and Vinnie about the G-Shock. You want a tough, reliable watch that you will never have to worry about again? www.casio.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.detail&catalog=Watches§ion=G%2DShock&product=GW300A%2D1V Tough, no batteries to replace, and it automatically calibrates itself to the NIST Atomic Clock. All for $73 at Wally World. If you want something a little dressier, go with the metal-cased version for $93 at Sam's Club. www.casio.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.detail&catalog=Watches§ion=G%2DShock&product=MTG900DA%2D8V Why pay more? |
Oh shit, I may have just pissed myself!
