Gonna watch it tonite, the new version, in honor of the passing of that lunatic.

[#1]
It's good.

See if you catch Harrison Ford.

Total piece of drug induced trash...........the movie is unwatchable with a few entertaining scenes

[#3]
Hes on now. I've seen this a few times.

Do you know where the Gunney is? (R Lee)
7/2/2004 4:04:55 PM EDT
[#4]
R Lee is the pilot of one of the gunships (Eagle Thrust Seven) attacking the ville.  A very brief shot of him.
7/2/2004 4:05:54 PM EDT
[#5]
He may be a lunatic, but there was an interview clip on the news tonight of Brando. I got to give him credit for this (paraphrase) "People say that acting is an art. Acting isn't art; a Rembrandt painting is art."

Horrible film.
7/2/2004 4:06:16 PM EDT

I thought the redux version was terrible.

That's the way I've always felt, but I have been afraid to say as much since everyone else seems to like it.

I like the movie.

Having said that, the original editing was done for a good reason.

I liked the dinner scene with the frenchies and the tiger scene is my favorite.

Great film.

What's better?  Hamburger Hill, Casualties of war, We Were soldiers? Now that's some World class shit.
7/2/2004 4:23:34 PM EDT

Great film.

An Average film hugely overrated.
7/2/2004 4:27:27 PM EDT

He's a lot easier to catch than the gunny. It's not like he just walks through a shot.

I didn't like the redux version, imagin, greedo shooting first.

[#17]
reduex is crap
The original is great.........it's the type of movie you either "get" or you don't....not a shoot-em-up like We Were Soldiers which I found to be boring after 20 minutes of the same scene...(the whole movie is one scene)

That movie is pure genius.  Remember, it's SET in Vietnam, it's not about Vietnam.  If you can understand that and see it as a work of art and literature instead of strict Hollywood entertainment (which it's not) it's hard not to like Apocalyspe Now.

Joseph Conrad’s Heart of darkness

The book was based on the 19th century Congo.

Great Rant by Dennis Hopper.

Do you know what the man is saying? Do you? This is dialectics. It's very simple dialectics. One through nine, no maybes, no supposes, no fractions. You can't travel in space, you can't go out into space, you know, without, like, you know, with fractions. What are you going to land on, one quarter, three-eighths, what are you going to do when you go from here to Venus or something -- that's dialectic physics, OK? Dialectic logic is there's only love and hate, you either love somebody or you hate them.

HUH????

The whole movie is full of this kind of meaningless dialogue.  It's like it was written by a bunch of monkeys with typewriters.  Totally meaningless.

You have to take it in the context of the movie. This is someone who was in the jungle too long, and has seen unreal happenings.

If you watch the movie and take everything you see at face value, where everything is nothing more and nothing less than it appears to be; if you can listen to and accept every word spoken, you can get a pretty good feeling for what it felt like to be there.

I watced it a couple of months ago & was surprised to see the Gunny in it. I bought a copy at a garage sale, & watched it at work. I saw Harrison Ford but I won't say where.

He has like a whole scene. It's not like he did some walk through cameo. Why does everyone think he's hard to find?

The air cav commander is Bob Duvall. Ask Hokie.

Exactly, usually the "book" is almost ALWAYS better than the film ( i.e. Lord of the Rings ) BUT in the case of Apocolypse Now the film was MUCH better than the book.  "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad is truly one of the most over rated pieces of crap I have ever had the displeasure of reading.  Apocalypse Now actually makes it bearable.

I do completely understand why the film was edited to it's standard format for the theaters upon it's originalrelease though there are certain things I like about the "redux" version.  It is a sahme that Cppola didn't work a bit harder on the technical accuracy of the more military aspects of the film...but I still think it's very interesting.

I can't forget Coppola " act like you're fighting!act like you're fighting!" ... I'm not sure it was ever meant to be an accurate recreation of Vietnam.
But with GulfWar II going on, I've thought about Kurtz more than once, and I've wondered if he was crazy after all.
I use his phrase "like a diamond bullet to the brain" a lot.

I thought that whole French thing was really out of place. Had they made a movie based on just the French plantation owners experiences during the Viet Nam War, it might have been kind of interesting.
