Running windows 98 trying to instal software for a CAC card reader.  Install got messed up and had to retry.  Program will not let me complete because it says a prior install of the wrong versionis still running and needs to complete first.  I rebooted several times, ut still the same.  Checked start menu but nothing,  What do I do to stop the initial install and reinstall the correct stuff?

Uninstall the program from the Control panel, if you've done that check in your startup folder to see if there is a shortcut to launch the program if it is delete it (deleting it causes the program not to run at boot everytime). Other than that You'd have to dig in the registry. Are you very familiar with it?

Not working as in won't uninstall or doesn't help? The registry is where a lot of *hidden* (so to speak) settings for programs are located. You can access it by going to Start-->Run and typing 'regedit'

Go to Device Manager in the Control Panel
and see if the card reader appears in the list.
If it does, you should be able to right click on
it and set it to disabled. Then attempt to
uninstall the program (if it has not already been
uninstalled). Reboot and try to reinstall.

Actually, does Win98 have Add/Remove Hardware
because that might work too (I have 2K so I
am going from memory).

In the Registry, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run.  See if there is an entry in there that pertains to that software.  If so, delete it then reboot.

If you don't know what your doing don't mess with the registry because you can really mess stuff up.

Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware.   If you see the device listed or listed with an exclamation point then select it go to properties and try to update driver.  Follow the prompts and let it try and finish putting the original set of drivers in.  Once that works then you can do the same operation and put in the new drivers.  If the card reader does not show up look for an unknown device and try the above steps.  lastly if it does not show up you can go to add new hardware and try manually installing from the disk and it should pick up and finish the install.

Good luck.

Heres an idea ! Call the tech support number for the CAC reader and its software.  Not trying to be a smart ass but most of the info youll get here is gona do one of two things;  not work or get you into some unfamiliar area of your computer that you can cause more damage to. The registry is a big no-no if you dont know what your doing, itll toast your HD files fast if you delete the wrong file.Calling the support line for the specific software will allow you to deal with someone who is familiar with the specific registry entries of that software. Just tryin to keep you from makein mistakes I made a long time ago, before i edumacated myself about PC's.

Good luck........

Don't go into the registry.

Just run MSCONFIG and go to the STARTUP tab and take a look there.

Before calling tech support, reboot and press F8 and boot into safe mode.

Try to perform the uninstall once it is in safe mode.
