What rifle would you recommend for a survival rifle for north of Fairbanks, or arounf Fort Yukon??

Use what our guys use up in those parts. I'm guessing you already own one!

I think its the ar7 that disasembles and fits in the stock.

Well, I figured I might need a little more power, such as 45-70, dont think a grizzly would slow down much with a 5.56, but I have never been there, and have to leave tomorrow

I figure, if the grizzly is already on top of you, what good is a .50 cal rifle anyway.
I'd feel confident trying to stop a grizzly charging me from 50 yards with the weapon I train the most with.
Putting half a dozen rounds in a grizzly's chest and head during his charge should render him inoperable.

If it were up to me, i'd take my AR everywhere. Outside the house that is. Inside, it's never out of arms reach!

Having lived in the Fairbanks area and having flown into Ft. Yukon many times I would say your best bet for an all around rifle would be a  338 Winchester Mag. Good hunting rifle and plenty good enough for Griz. If it's just for bear and people protection the 12 ga is great too. I guess it depends on what you are doing and what kind of "survival" situation you speak of.

^Past few suggestions. (3" slugs + mag extension)

And, a 45-70 would be just fine too.

A pure survival rifle?  A .22, or a 30/06 if your thinking goes that way.

A guy I met who travels alone in the woods for weeks at a time - winter too - dropped him off at Denali park in NOVEMBER with his sled - carries a Henry lever action 22 for birds.
