That moon was replaced by Kling-ons.

As incredible a designer as Burt Rutan is, this flight today was basically a stunt.  Sub orbital flight is good for nothing more than making a few bucks off of rich people who want to say they are "Astronauts".

Rick,

It ain`t a stunt. They accomplished something only governments have previously been able to do. And they did it at scales of magnitude cheaper than anyone thought possible. There`s a lot of red faces at Nasa right now along with tight sphincters. The next time they go to congress looking for $$, they have some explaining why it costs the US so much to go into space.

Ultimately, we will be able to afford sub-orbital flights and these will  lead to orbital flights as the sub-orbital vehicles become more capable.

And I'm glad that they gave this pioneering ship such a fitting name.

Next week the pilot will get to christen the new aircraft carrier USS Boat.

NASA didn't do a full orbit for its first manned flight either.

And these "Sunts for rich people" earn them MONEY to build bigger spacecraft, while NASA founders in read ink.

I guess that Rutan's group will be the winners of the X-prize if this looks as good as they say.

But yeah, this is a giant leap, and Rutan it a Genius.

The vehicles are not the problem.

Unfortunately the laws of physics are pretty absolute.  The difference between 3000 MPH and the 17000+ MPH needed to attain orbit is billions of dollars and a fuel tank the size of a mini-mall.

Don't get me wrong, what Rutan accomplished today ranks among the greatest achievements in the history of flight.  It's just that for a meaningful payload (ie people) to leave the earth on a budget, we are talking about developing radically new propulsion systems and everything is just sci-fi right now.

No thats just what NASA wants everyone to think.  Not about the physics part, but that it takes billions to build a "safe" vheicle.

Remeber, these guys did all this on only $20 million, the average space shuttle flight costs $450 million!!!!!   Not bad considering their budget.
