HOW DO I MAKE THIS THING GO AWAY????? no wonder people come to hate Microsoft. Its like a friggen virus. |
| Microsoft did not make their instant messager easy to remove. I do have a simple and easy to use program that will remove it for you. IM on this board or email me if you want me to email the program to you. It's a tiny file. I've only used it on a Windows XP machine. I don't know if it will work with any other version of Windows. |
That is for the windows messenging service, not the chat program people use on the internet. From the GRC site Windows Messenger Service The first thing to understand is that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble. |
Just to clarify, the program I have is not the same as the one at the above link. Mine is for the Windows Messenger not the messenging service. |

If you have windows 2k or xp go to your control panel Open administrative tools (you may have to switch to classical mode in xp) Open Services Look for an entry in the list called "Messenger" Right click and hit properties Change startup type to disabled Click OK And you're set! -Foxxz |
Again, that is for the messenger service, not the chat program. |

I prefer the 'brute force' method. Navigate to c:\program files with the windows explorer. locate the Messenger folder. Rename it. Doesn't matter to what (just make sure you remember what), just rename it. Ignore the 'end of the world' messages. If it won't let you rename it, open the task manager, click the processes tab, make sure the 'view processes from all users' is checked and locate 'msmsg.exe'. End it by clicking the end process button. Then attempt to rename that folder. Once you've done that, reboot Once it comes back up, go back to c:\program files and delete that folder you renamed. Empty the recycling bin. No more MSN messenger. Yeah, brute force, I know, but it works. |

Go to messenger's options, click on the "general" tab, and tell it not to run automatically (uncheck) at windows start-up or sign in with an internet connection. Also, go to start/run then type "msconfig", then click on the start-up tab. Uncheck MsnMsgr, then reboot. |
Yup, this is my preferred method also. Works every time! ByteTheBullet (-: |
