I went out to a local range today to do a little plinking and the 100 yard range was closed because they
were fixing to have a CMP match. So I kicked in  $5 and grabbed my carbine out of the truck.

The RO said,  "You might want to shoot one of our Garands. Those M1 carbines aren't very accurate."
I said, "That's OK. Neither am I".

"Do you have 60 rounds ?" he asked. "Yep, 1952 Military ball".
Another shooter rolls his eyes .
"Suit yourself" the RO says.

I didn't shoot too well but I don't think it was the rifle or ammo.
It was fun and now I can send away for a CMP Garand

Meltdown,

Been shooting CMP for years. It's the reason I joined Arfcom, the competitive forum.

The two things you have to do to learn to shoot, and shoot well are shoot against people that are better than you and shoot with a rifle that's better than you.

For most guys that enter CMP that means grab any rifle and shoot.

Of course, I can tell you what a great shot I am because you ain't never seen me shoot.

Go for it! get ahold of the CMP sked and get into it.

edited to add, a lot of my early scores looked like that. OTOH, I have my days even now(blush)

BTW, 2 other things: Well kept range, and carbines suck for accuracy. You should have taken them up on their offer of a Garand,

It is great that you got out and shot.
And even better that you weren't shamed by the uppity guy rolling his eyes.
Good job.
Enjoy your Garand.

Next time I will shoot my Garand with handloads. I didn't take thier offer for two reasons.
(1) $18 with thier gun and ammo or $5 with mine.
(2) Didn't want to dis my carbine by leaving her in the car and borrowing someone else's gun

Better check the sights... you got three flyers in the black.

On a different note, always say yes when someone offers you a chance to shoot their Garand.

Good job. Now get a couple of those gov M1's Just think how much the gun grabbers must hate it knowing that you can get a military rifle shipped right to your door, from gov inventory no less.

You missed my vague meaning...I wish I had the nerve to do that. You wouldn't believe what it took to go to the first ARFCom shoot. Meeting strange people strangers, with guns, out in the middle of nowhere, that I met on the Internet, with no cell service...Call me crazy, but I am so glad I did!!! You'd think I'd learn.

That's a damn fine shooting range.  Where I shot CMP matches, we had to watch out for rattlesnakes and brush fire.

Here is the web site for that range

I shoot USPSA at the same range

Hrm, funny..with my first Carbine, so long as I re-aligned the rear sight after each shot (push it back to center with my thumb), I was hitting paper plates at 100 yards with every shot...

I've since peened the rear sight into place, and now...whoa momma

I've only had seirous off-sight problems after emptying about 100 rounds through it straight with no rest...but maybe that's just me, and the way I wave the thing around. Flag-like, almost.

CMP shoots are always a good time.  take a young'n when you get the chance.  looks like a nice range, and i've never been able to do real well with a carbine at 100 yards either.

Guys in SD are generally friendly and the ranges are well kept.  You don't really feel like an "outsider", as there are usually small groups (< 20), and they are helpful.

Oh, GOOD JOB meltdown!

Swing that carbine by and I will see what I can fix you up with for good sights.

HEY!

He told me to draw and fire, so I did.   Wasn't that the night I kicked over the "grandma" to shoot the targets?

I'm sorry but it looks like most of those shots would be in the torso of a man sized target at that range...

Thats the only metric that counts.

Not to me. I'm basically a paper shooter. The X ring is what counts for me.

(OK,OK, if I HAD to, and ONLY to defend me and mine, I would do what I have to)

Meltdown, get involved in that CMP program. To become a better shooter, you have to shoot against guys that are better than you with a rifle that's better than you.

BTW, not too bad shooting with a carbine. I've owned about half a dozen of them and they're really NOT that accurate.

Hey that's not too bad for a combat carbine.

CMP looks like fun.

I'll have to check it out in my area.

If you are  not a member of the club, it DOESN"T MATTER.

CMP matches are open to the public.

(So is the ARFCOM competitive forum)

BTW, if the bug bites you, DO NOT go charging out and buy all of the stuff. Be patient and find out what you REALLY NEED.(a rifle, a couple mags and a raggedy piece of carpet)

I assume this was CMP affliated?

Thanks for the info.

Most clubs have Garands you can borrow, which means all you have to do is pay for surplus ammo, which is cheap.

if you decide you like the sport, DO NOT BUY A GARAND FOR COMPETITION!!!!!

get a Bushy service rifle thru CMP.

The Garand was good in it's day, but the AR these days is FAR more accurate than the m1 or the m14.

Trust me on this one!

I may get the Bushy upper and slap it on my lower if I do get serious.

I thought CMP only sold ar15 goodies to clubs, not the public?

Maybe I should borrow my buddies AR15 to go shoot a Hi Power match?  I think I'm already qualified anyway since I shot a lot in Hunter's Safety.

Pretty good job, as far as I'm concerned, especially with the carbine.  That range looks great too.
