I have had this nagging tooth pain for a couple weeks but haven't had the time to fit going to the dentist in the schedule.  Turns out the tooth is absesed and now I have to wait until Tuesday to have it done.  Never had one done before, hell I have only had 1 cavity.  Can I expect lots of pain after the procedure or will it ease the pain that I am in now.

Root canal work is the last known "mideval dental practice" as I recall it is painfull I am certain it was a form of torture!!, however not having it taken care of is not an option.  the good thing is that the pain is only shortterm  and afterwards you can be 100%.  also after procedure you can comment on how you survived.  good luck...too bad you must wait until next week.  until then take a few Advil and drink alot

It will feel 10 times better than it does now.  The pain you feel now is caused by pressure and infection from the abssess.  Once the dentist drills and cleans it out that tooth wiil be dead and you wont feel it anymore.  btw the dead tooth is just as strong as the living tooth.

What he said.  I had one done a couple of months ago, and it felt so much better afterwards.  The procedure was not bad at all, I felt more pressure than pain.  Make sure that you go to an endodontist or a dentist that specializes in root canals.  It can be really bad if they miss some of the root.  Good luck!

A man goes to a dentist for a root canal.

Dentist starts to give him a shot, but the man says that he's afraid of needles.

So dentist starts to give him some nitrous oxide gas, but the man says that it makes him nauseous.

So the doc finally says "Here then, take this Viagra".

The man says "How will that help the pain ???"

The doc says "It won't....but at least you'll have something to hang on to" Ha!

Yes!

My dad is a dentist and I have helped him sometimes work on his patients.
They always scream out in sever pain and agony. It hurts real bad.
A lake of blood will flow as well. Get lots of drugs for the pain. You will need it.

When he/she takes the little drill and starts twirling it down into the root SPEAK UP! if you feel like they are being too aggressive or in a hurry.

My doctor had to leave in the middle of my last one and his associate took over and went a little too far.

It still bothers me now and then 8 years later.

I had one done a good while back.. I think I am immune to the anesthesia.  He said he gave me enough to do 3 root canals at once.  Once he got the tooth open he squirted the stuff onto the damn nerve or whatever and that is the most intense pain i've ever had.  It only hurt for maybe 3 seconds before it went completely numb and he worked on it for a bit and I felt nothing.

Taking a valium before will also help some.

If the dentist is any good, and does a proper nerve block, you won't feel a thing. The dentist I go to is nicknamed "painless". I got to huff nitrous legally for almost an hour on my last crown

Tell him that if he hurts you, you are going to kick him in the balls

The nitrous is the only thing I am looking forward to

One thing that gave root canals a bad name, is that sometimes if the abscess becomes severe, it can change the PH of the tissue dramatically. This in turn can degrade the efficacy of the anesthetic. For years though, nobody knew this. The doc would shoot you up with three shots and if you still complained of pain they just figured that you were a wimp. Hence the word got around that root canals hurt like hell.

Now that they understand this though, new types of shots specifically for abscesses have been created.
