hope all are well. I inherited a SVT-40 sniper rifle from my great uncle years ago and was curious of the value. The rifle is verified as a true sniper numbers matching rifle including stock.  There was not a scope on the rifle when I received it and have since added one with a repo mouth. The original scope and mount are somewhere on my great uncles estate. He took the scope off and at the time didnt recall where he had put it. He said that his kids always wanted to mess with it so he pulled it off so they wouldn't break it.  I am looking for honest value of rifle as is and also with original optic. There is no sling and one original magazine.

Here is a complete rifle with scope, sling, bayonet that sold last year for $5,750.

Somewhere between the post above me and the post above that.

Auctions, especially big ones like Rock Island or Morphy’s bring big bucks and I would say are the max of high market value in most cases. That being said, regular SVTs bring stupid money now. My shop had one with a sportorized Monte Carlo style stock on it and I saw it when it came in with light surface rust all over it.

They cleaned it up and put it up for sale. I joked with the owner as to who the hell would buy it for I think it was $1200. Somebody did though.

Standard, refurbed SVT-40s seem to be going for >$2000 these days. So, somewhere above that.

I'd guess somewhere between $2-4k

I passed on an unmolested one at a local shop three years ago for $1200 and have been kicking myself since.  I did go home with a half decent Turk Mauser that day, though.

I also have a legit one (but refurbished and plum), but have neither a mount or optic.   The value is the original mount and optic. A real sniper will have a C stamp near the breech.  Also, it will have the fore/aft mount location groove milled into the very upper rear of the receiver. The rail grooves are meaningless because all rifles had them up to the point where they decided the SVT was unsuitable for sniping.   After that, slabsides only.

I once posed a pic of the location groove and the stamp and some dude jumped my shit about enabling fakery.

I sold my non sniper for 1800 2 years ago if that gives you any help

Also, there was once an aftermarket mount that was a semicircle type of thing that reached around to the rail grooves.  This was intended to be utilitarian and not mimic the original. I think is was a half assed attempt to make a mount that worked on any railed rifle. Again, rails do not make a sniper.

I hope your targets are and you find legitimate originals.  Go for the trifecta and hope a bayonet is with it.

Is the rifles bolt plum colored or left unfinished?

Real snipers have a particular modification in addition to the mounting grooves on the reciever that most rifles have as standard.

Am I going to get thrashed if I post a pic of said modification?

I tend to lean towards the information is good camp rather than the 'you enable forgers' camp.

It's a notch at the end the receiver where the scope mount locks onto.

The rifle from the auction was made by factory No.74 NKV in Izhevsk and this factory never made any sniper rifle (apart of experimental and trial).

Any headway in finding the mount and optic?

Is yours a plum refurb, or original?  Most originals today will be Finn captures and be [SA] marked.

Mine is a plum refurbishment. AFAIK, in Soviet style, since they were no longer recognized as official sniper rifles,  they were separated from their optics and refurbed like any other rack grade rifle.

Rifle is authentic sniper, most likely Finnish capture. Bolt and carrier are mismatched and along with cracks in stock it reduces the value. Rifle was last time seen with Kar98k sling, repro magazine, repro mount and refurbished 1940 PU scope. P.S. If you shoot authentic sniper with repro mount - you will damage the notch.
