I am having a problem with a computer at work. It is incredibly slow. The problem began after an employee(no longer employed) downloaded kazaa. I have tried to remove it with the ADD/DELETE program box in Windows 2000. I was able to (I thought) delete kazaa, but the Bullguard virus program will not allow me to delete it. When I try the computer goes to a blue screen with DOS like writing telling me about a memory dump because a file was interfering "regspy.sys" and to contact the SysAdmin, which unfortunately by default is me. I really don't know what to do or if maybe I have caught a virus. I would appreiate any help ya'll could give. 96Ag |

Kazaa is shit-ware. When you install it you agree to a bunch of windows which allow other companies (Gator, Gain, et al.) to install more shit-ware at THEIR discretion. You do not own your PC any longer. Really. It's that bad. Get the machine running again. Don't worry about "uninstalling things for now. Download Spybot and AdAware immediately. Install them both. Unplug from the internet. Run both programs. Delete all the crap that they find. Turn off your Antivirus program. Uninstall Kazaa. Uninstall your anti-virus program. Drive to a computer store and buy/install Symantec's AntiVirus product. Plug back into the web. Oh... and I hope you have a Firewall if you're on a persistent internet connection (Cable or DSL). Luck! ETA: Spybot - download.com.com/3000-2144-10122137.html?part=104443&subj=dlpage&tag=button AdAware - download.com.com/3000-2094-10045910.html?legacy=cnet |

I tried to start in safe mode and remove Bullguard but the remove box was grayed out and unavailable. This computer used to be fast and it seems like th pages freeze and then quickly load. I tried the adaware and found files to remove but I don't want to spend my money to fix a company problem. Adaware says that Kazaa is still on the computer even though it does not show in the Add/Remove box. I am running Windows 2000 if that helps. I have had Spybot on the computer for a while. Are there any free alternatives? Or any other advice before I have to beg for company money(which is very tight)? Thanks 96Ag |

Take a look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and find out what apps are launching at startup. You can remove them there, start the machine in safe mode, and run Ad-Aware and Spybot to clean things up. By the way, Ad-Aware Standard is free: Ad-aware 6.0 build 181 IM me if that doesn't fix your problem and I'll see what I can do to help you resolve the issue. E-95 |
Actually, now that I think of it you need to start in safe mode first, then remove the spy apps from the registry. I've seen some that re-add themselves to the registry during system shutdown. E-95 |
yeah that what I do. when my pc jets jammed just save what I want then shred it all and reboot |
