I am installing Windows 2000 onto a laptop.  The laptop only has a 56k modem, no high speed capability.  I would like to use my desktop pc, that has a high speed DSL connenction, to download all the necessary service packs and updates.  Then burn them to a cd and install them on the laptop.  Does anyone know how to do this?  Thanks!

You would need to find out what you need. Can't you connect your laptop to the Hi Speed?

Edited because I can't spell.

Shouldn't be any real trick to it. All of the patches should be executable programs. Just burn them to the CD, put the CD in your laptop, and one by one, run the programs from the CD.

EDIT - You can get a list of the latest service pack from Microsoft's website.

Get a PC Card network adapter.

Or a USB network adapter.

It does not have a networking card.  I am doing this for a friend, he is going to Israel for 8 months and is taking taking the laptop with him.  It currently has Windows 98 on it, but 98 is not compatible with some devices he will be using while he is there.   He will not have high-speed access over there, so it doesn't make sense to buy a networking card for the laptop.

To do all the updates and crap it doesn't make any sense not to buy a network card.

Network cards are cheap.

You would be better off just hooking it up to a POTS line and using the Windows automatic update feature of 98 or buying a network card. Cheap PMIC ones are about $20.00.
Good luck.
