It's the time of year when the airwaves are full of graduation talk, be it high school or university. Typically in reference to high school, there is usually a reference to the 'achievement' of graduation. What, that's a friggin expecation, not an achievement. I remember these people being around even when I left HS in 1988. They seemed to think that it was a big deal, a successful navigation of an intellectual sea. Congrats, you are not a COMPLETE loser! or Congrats on resisting the urge to drop out! I can see it being a social ritual, and a rite of passage to being an adult, but the vast majority of the graduates haven't just won a Nobel prize in Physics! For them it's like telling them good job for reaching another birthday... I remember the half ass hacks who skated through, only to pat themselves on the back and jump on the achievement bandwagon. It's silly, I knew I skated, and I knew that the bar was set very low for all of us. Let's not be PC here, there are kids who deserve accolades, and those who should be told "Here's your diploma, now good luck and get the fuck out!" I would have been told to get out... |
