What leads me to believe it's parenting that has failed?

Growing up? My friends and I all played and did stuff outside...
Despite Sega Genesis/super Nintendo... nobody wanted to sit and play video games...
Internet came about later, and even with the desktops we didn't live on computers...
We had responsibilities/tasks to do on top of homework, then did things outside...

What's different?
I was raised in a strict, very conservative household. In a rural small town. Where child labor laws are laughed at. We worked got paid under the table, bought our own first vehicles, dirt bikes, quads, snowmobiles etc. Our fathers were our idols/heros, and disappointing pops, letting him down, was not an option...We worked on farms, in shops, with skilled tradesmen that owned their own businesses. Some of us ran heavy equipment as teenagers. Things most here haven't done as an adult? We did as teenagers. We had to prove ourselves trust worthy/reponsible. Thus as a result-it wasn't a big deal to meet up with friends and shoot in the woods. No adult supervision. At 13/14+...
We had parties in the woods, where we'd need lifted trucks to get to the party spot far and away from johnny law and others who'd call the cops on us. We had money, some had older brothers/cousins to grab us beer/booze. We didn't allow dope of any kind, as we all looked down on the ones who did...we were better than that. We didn't have rampant pregnancies prior to marraige either! Shocker I know... why? We held each other to higher standards... your buddy confesses his girlfriend is late? He chose his next words carefully or he'd be picking up his teeth. And the girls were worse to each other than we were... trailer trash/low life's on the states dole did that shit. Good way to get kicked out of the house too... that shit was not condoned.

We didn't die...we weren't glued to a phone letting life pass us by...nor did we envy what others did on social media, and most importantly, didn't have kids out of wedlock when we were kids ourselves nor have STDs... good way to be cast aside and mocked/ridiculed-get a chick pregnant or a blister on your mister.


The ones I employ? Raised in suburbia.

They only had 1 expectation-do good in school.
Their fun? Cooped up inside with xbox/playstation, pcs/laptops. Their mothers worried whether they'd get hit by a car and couldn't trust them to ride a bicycle with friends let alone a dirt bike. "The poors" kids played outside.
They didn't get jobs until graduating highschool, unless "poors" and picked up part time gigs and remedial tasks (cashier/burger flipper/shelve stocker)
Their hero's? Kneeling athletes. Degenerate actors/musicians. Anyone with a youtube channel.
The expectations and responsibilities they were held to? Do good in school. Drag the herby curby back from the road.
Basic shit. They were shaped and molded/influenced mainly by school and games/the internet.
They tell me about times where teenage pregnancies and even into early 20s is near celebrated/endorsed.
That their parents would let them play house so they could finish school, have a life, grandma/grandpa will raise it for you! God forbid they struggle.
That's that whole giving them better never letting them struggle/figure things out, protecting them from themselves..
For a couple of them? This is their first job...and they're in their early 20s...
When I was their age? I had bought my first house, spent most of my free time fixing it up, while in college full time. Had a whole lot more going for me than they do... I find that sad...

This lasted 3 whole days until we got popped in Colonie.
The assembly that followed, the shit storm the school tried to cause? Epic.
We had state troopers, Cuomos boys, for SROs. And the school tried to use the troopers as their own personal police force. That's no bullshit.

Towards the end of my junior year? That's when they enacted the 0 tolerance policy. Fight on school grounds? If neither parties parents pressed charges?
The school would, on both. How dare you believe in self defense. How dare you defend dorks from bullies.
That's okay. Just means I follow their bus/car home and get their ass in their front lawn. Or meet up somewhere mutually agreed. No weaons. No cops. No friends to jump in.

No, a parent won't know everything, but sadly most parents aren't really "involved" with their kids. They even say their kids have a right to "privacy" where they won't even search their kid's room to see what their kids are up to.

Most "parents" now a days both work. Family "dinners" barely exist. Parents aren't and/or won't take the time to use things like family dinners to chat and bond and find out what their kids are up to. They don't meet/check out their kids' friends (and the friends' parents).
