OSB needs to get with the program.
Going to need about 40-50 sheets in the next few months. $25/sheet would be a whole lot more palatable than $48/sheet. |

it's getting wrecked still $649, another 39% fall and it's back to $400

Good, I need plywood for a patio roof and some decking for my raised cistern.

Dipping locally. 2*4s down 30% this week at hd. Of course I just got my sawmill running good. Now if only zip panels would follow I could get building my house.

I can start my garage and shed projects once it hits reasonable.

Speaking of lumber, I am having 5 white oaks taken down tomorrow. Too close to the house and want to open the backyard up. Planning on putting fire pit in as well. I've Never chopped wood. Should I tell the tree company to leave me the trunks? I think they'd be willing to cut the tree into manageable pieces but how long should they cut them to if I want to split the wood

Firewood length is wholly dependent on what you’re burning it in.
My stove can take a 22” log. I shoot for 18-20” when cutting and split it into different size pieces…some for getting the fire up and going, some for overnight logs. Back to lumber: Osb down about $7/sheet and PT 2x10x12 down about the same yesterday at Lowe’s. |

Quoted: Tell that to the lumber brokers and saw mills. There is jack shit available with no one seeing a change anytime soon. I am asking for the inside reasons for this monstrosity and the answer is they don’t have the manpower to get it done. One mill has millions and millions of board feet ready to come out of the woods and just can’t get it done and cut. It’s a big mill too not some backyard Wood Mizer. View Quote Funny thing is that the trees know nothing about any of this. They just keep growing and growing. A company named Weyerhaeuser owns bazillions of acres of timberland in Mississippi and all over the country. They plant pine trees and harvest them like a cash crop. This is what it looks like back in the area where I was raised: Attached File |

Demand is still insane. Southern Pine is still about double the pre-covid price. Our schedule is full through the end of the year (wood trusses- residential, commercial, multi-family). It's rare for us to not be able to slip some houses in within a couple weeks...we're turning people away every day now.
eta Worse, we're trying to ramp up a second shift, but can't find enough new bodies to work it. |

I just called the local Harbins, and their price for a treated 16' 2x8 is actually higher than the last time I checked. A month or so ago, they were $32/each....today they quoted me $39 each. Treated 12' 6x6's are $79 each...

Prices should have peaked by now depending on how they buy and their business model. But they will still need to burn through that inventory so they can buy cheaper material. Those who either bought well on contracts, or who ran lean inventories will make out now. The home centers don’t care what they make on their lumber, they don’t do enough volume to matter into he grand scheme of things. |

How much you want to bet the price of wood will NEVER go back down to pre COVID prices?? (....as manufacturers price-fix and take advantage! )
Sure we will be happy to take any great price cut in wood from its recent highs. But I have a feeling we went 60 steps forward in increases, but will only retrace 40 steps back. This reminds me of the sky high $5 a gallon gasoline of yesteryear when also anything petroleum related went up in sympathy with the petroleum increase. Paint thinner, acetone, laquer thinner, etc took a huge leap in price. When the price of gasoline finally dropped to ridiculous lows of $1.59 (which we all enjoyed), the other products never went back down anywhere near the original price they had been. |

Go to a real lumber company View Quote Much of it is coming from the same sources and in my experience all that matters is whether you pick it or not. I live in a wood rich region, we have no problem finding quality wood anywhere. If I order wood for dropoff I typically end up with 10% garbage wood that needs to be traded out. Doesnt matter if its Home Depot or (Insert local highly regarded lumber yard here). When the person picking isnt the person building they just throw the next piece on the pile. I stopped paying a premium years back for the lumber yards, I just pick my own at HD most of the time. |
