I have a WT that is really making me insane. Since I don’t have insurance anymore, I was thinking........

That since its broken the skin if I put a whole lot of Ambisol on the area and used an Exacto knife if its possible to take out myself?

What do you all think? The tooth is a little sideways, but I think it still could come out. I have an X-ray of it too.

I hope you're kidding.  I had a dentist crack my jaw trying to get one out.  If you're serious, go rent Castaway - I think the ice skate technique shows merit

Your kidding, right?

Your going to have to see a doctor to repair the damage you will do to your mouth.

My mother works for a dental office and i have heard stories of people doing it it worked but the ran into problems down the road infection so on and so on. it must be hard riding in the car

are you gonna stitch it up yourself? not a good idea

a friend of mine had a wisdom tooth with an artery or vein running by it. The dentist wouldn't do it in the office because he said if the artery wqs compromised he could bleed to death right in the chair.

Make sure you do a live feed to this site.

I broke one of my back teeth and pulled the remainder of it out myself, it's NOT something I would recommend somebody doing.

None of the local dentists would touch my WT. They all wanted to refer me to an oral surgeon.

Then I found an old navy dentist who said, "No problem. Come on down."

He had to put his foot against my head (well not quite, but almost) and yank with all he had, but it came out and I lived to tell about it. Only charged me $125.

The problem with doing it yourself is going to be the wound it creates and your inability to stitch it up.

If you plan on adding the stitches as well then go for it.

Ambesol and an Exacto knife?  The only way you could extract an impacted wisdom tooth with that is to let your jawbone become so infected that the tooth would just fall out.  Of course by that time you would probably be dead.
5/18/2004 11:53:32 AM EDT
[#10]
Pull it. Slam some Ambesol on it, take a shot of Jack Black, grab it with pliars, and yank that bad boy out of there. Oh and make sure you video the whole process.

Navy Dental strikes again!  The last WT I had removed, the Doc put his knee and shin across my chest after a few unsuccessfull attempts.  Gotta love that Navy medical branch!

What happened to your job with UMD?

BTW Don't do it - you can screw yourself up worse.  Talk with the dentist - they can set you up with a payment system if needed.

[#13]
You have GOT to be kidding.

Most dentists/oral surgeons can set up payment plans if you can't pay all at once.

Just because the tooth has "broken the skin" doesn't mean you'll be able to get it out by your method.  I have a tooth like that - but x-rays show that it is almost horizontal.  The part which I can feel is actually the side.  There's a possibility that I'll lose the tooth in front of it when it's removed.

When the Navy dentist pulled my wisdom teeth, he started right after I got the shots before the antisthetic started working. The first one hurt so bad I couldn't even scream. I was pretty dazed for the rest of them. I would sell a gun beore I would try to do that myself.

Hey M4, when you done with that, would ya mind doing your own vasectomy?
5/18/2004 12:11:49 PM EDT

 Negative, brother.

Some WT can be extracted easier than others.  Its location and its "legs" can grow in such a way that only oral surgeons have the confidence to extract it.  Let the pros do it.

 Edited to speling.

It just feels like I could do it.

Im going to get a dental mirror and look ay it in a few minutes.

I hope what you guys are saying isn’t true, I totally forgot all about the stitches needed after wards.

What about shooting the tooth out of your head? Obviously you would want the barrel to be pointed so that the bullet hits the tooth and travels away from you...

It ain't like yanking your front tooth, dude...

Both my bottom wisdom teeth were impacted.

I DEMANDED the doc (who was an oral surgeon) put me under; I did NOT want to be conscious and hear him crack shit, let alone smell it when he went to work on me with a saw.

The first day after was fine. The next day sucked. On day 3, it was time to see the doc again...because my right bottom tooth had drysocketed.

You think yanking a tooth by yourself is manly?

Get a drysocketed wisdom tooth and try to live without any mind-altering drugs.

Man, I begged, pleaded, demanded, threatened, and refused to leave his office until he wrote me a script for at LEAST Percocet. He wrote me one for Endocet. I was taking up to 5 a day because I couldn't function otherwise (not that I was functioning in peak condition after popping one of those to begin with anyway...)

Sleep was impossible without taking at LEAST one. After 2 weeks, it still had not healed; I heard this was normal. I didn't believe it. Had to refill my script.

Trust me. Unless you got a pharmacy at your disposal...you WANT a doc of some kind to do the work.

Yep. I had to have stitches when they took mine out. I remember waking up a little bit and feeling the hammer and chisel working away at one of them.

Go for it!

Yeah, it was done once on The Three Stooges with a piece of string and a door.

If it pushed through, it won't cost as much as you think to have it extracted.  Now don't go get yourself a Darwin award for gagging on that exacto knife.

I hear ya!  When we discussed the options, he said another $50 and they put me out, and they took plastic.

btw....If you have medical insurance, it could cover it because it is surgery.   My dental coverage covers the drill 'em and fill 'em part.

Sure hope you read what guys are telling you!

I had all 4 WT taken at the same time, all below the surface coming in horizontal. I had a great oral surgeon who gave me the choice of staying awake or going to sleep. It's like WTF--yeah I'm going to sleep for this! Yes, I had already noted that the DR and anethesiologist didn't seem or look gay (hate to wake up seeing them zipping their pants).
Whole procedure took 45 minutes and I was awake again, out the door with antibiotics and a tooth brush within the next 30 minutes.
Guy really knew his stuff, I never really felt that sore and the swelling was gone before I went back to work 3 days later.

Thats a BAD idea . Just go to the dentist it's not gonna cost that much to pull it.  You'll be better off in the long run letting the dentist do it .  It's not like when you were 6 pulling that loose tooth out that was hanging there.

No fucking way.
If you think Nick Berg had it bad, you'll be making a 100 times as much noise. Seriously.
Matter of fact, if they really wanted to torture people, they'd do their dental work then kick them out into the street with NO pain killers.
Things like this make you really want to thank God in person for putting this kind of pain in your life. This is the main reason I hope reincarnation is bullshit. Common evolution, help us out here.
How did people deal with it in the old days? Plyers?

I had 2 of 3 taken out a couple years ago (I only have 3).  A couple twists, popped it out, handed me some pain killers and cotton plugs (little mini-tampon lookin things)....sent me on my merry way.

A friend of mine is a retired dentist who was on a fishing trip in Bolivia.  His guide needed to have an emergency tooth extraction, and so, with a screw driver and a leatherman tool it was done.  Just a bottle of whisky for some relief.

Can you say INFECTION!

I had a root canel. Three months later I am in the hospital with OSTEOMYELITIS in my jaw. (Look It up on WEBMD.COM) or something. Lost three teeth- all good -on the right side of my lower jaw and had a PIC line (AN IV you do at home ) in my arm for six weeks...

Actually when I had my 2 top WT out, the surgeon used a technique much like depicted in castaway.  A punch-like tool was placed against the inner side of each tooth and popped out the side.  It helped that they were being forced out the gums at a 45 degree angle.

Ya know... up to this point you had me believing you were fairly intelligent... and now this.
Then again, who am I to talk... I got this tattoo  that I thought would look cool on my leg, and then decided I didn't want it anymore so I took the whole leg off... then realized I took off the wrong leg and was stuck with the tattoo... Tattoo

Wait until the BBQ and I'll make sure to bring my leatherman and some of that wart freezer-offer shit... I'l freeze it and ten shatter it right out of your head... it'll be sweet.

Then you cut off the other leg and tried to sue the tattoo parlor, but the judge threw it out because you didn't have a leg to stand on.

How 'bout them bone splinters that work their way through the gum weeks later?  It's a real experience if they come out and hit your tongue.  You'll swear that your gums have split open and a bone in the shape of a saw is slicing your tongue every second.

I had mine out about 25 years ago.  Twenty minutes and $200.  That included the sodium pentathol which knocked me out in seconds.

When my son had his done in 2002, $2000 and no dental insurance.

No.  Bad idea.

I had my first two done awake, but under the influence of NO2.  That sucked!  It is not cool to hear them first drill into your tooth, then reach in with a mini pry bar and break it in pieces.  He pulled it out in 4 hunks!!

When it came time for my second two, f*ck that, I was asleep.  Much nicer.
