That's not what Total SA, Exxon, Shell, et al did in Venezuela.

Nor did the Venezuelan government really give them that option.   They just rolled in and said "This is ours now.  Here's what we're paying you for it.  Like it or lump it."

330ish US rigs running currently. 50+ is good for most Texas plays.

We drilled a shitload under Obama and his Fed land bans.

Rising oil prices are the reason for higher prices at the pump. Expect 55ish per bbl for Q1 at least, so gas prices should stay about where they are.

The sky isn't falling....yet.

The order did not ban new drilling outright. It includes an exception giving a small number of senior Interior officials — the secretary, deputy secretary, solicitor and several assistant secretaries — authority to approve actions that otherwise would be suspended.

It's a curiosity to me: with all the money he has currently, I have to wonder what the drive would be to get any more. It's not like the family isn't set for life for generations.

OTOH, after the democrats are finished, there might not be enough currency available to keep anyone afloat. Maybe that's the motivation.

I literally have no idea.  Who's land does most oil production come from?  Any oil people want to chime in?

Oil and gas extracted from public lands and waters account for about a quarter of annual U.S. production. Extracting and burning those fuels generates the equivalent of almost 550 million tons (500 metric tons) of greenhouse gases annually, the U.S. Geological Survey said in a 2018 study.

Dominion Energy spent the last 8 years building gas drilling, pipelines, liquification plants, storage, and power infrastructure. Last summer they sold every last piece of it to Berkshire Hathaway, saying they wanted to focus on their core business of local energy production instead. This definitely makes me think they knew this was coming. Or it sure was a lucky gamble.

A large segment of domestic oil & gas production comes from under privately owned property. That said, there are many producing areas that are on federal land like offshore leases and north slope leases.

I'm not real sure what the government can do to cancel a paid up lease that has already been issued a drilling permit...but seeings how we don't appear to be a nation of laws anymore - I'd imagine they'll just 'cancel' them. That wouldn't fly in the private sector.

They also have the ability to impose production taxes high enough to make it economically infeasible to pursue drilling operations on federal lands.
