I can't imagine that 5 Howitzers can make a difference....

Funny. They DENIED my request to borrow one. What makes these ski resort folks more deserving than me?

I'm surprised that they let those things go....

" "It was designed to kill people, but it's a very valuable safety tool for us," said Rachael Woods, a spokeswoman at Lake Tahoe's Alpine Meadows"
Gee, we've been trying to tell the news media that about the semi-auto AW's that we all are so fond of here on AR15.com for years.
Guess when it's heavy artillery and being used for all those uppie skiers it's ok but if it's an AK or AR and used mostly for target shooting and home defence then it's not, wish they make up their minds.

I figure we're at war and the howitzers valued at a million dollar each aren't. It hit 104 degrees today here ... are there still places getting snowed on this time of year?

104???? Shittttttttttt

I read that report, and I agree it's an odd thing....................

Yeah, it's hard to believe the DoD just lends those things out....

If that's the case, I want one for a while, too!

Its ok for them to have a Howitzer on loan.  I just want to borrow an interceptor vest, Humvee and a M2.

Avie control work!

it isn't just about skier safety... avalanches regularly close roads and can kill motorists... last year avalanches closed 30 miles of I-70 West of Denver or THREE DAYS.

They use a number of solutions including:

dropping 2 1/4 lbs bombs from helicopters
throwing 2 1/4 lbs charges  and diving behind a rock
putting charges in cornice and using det cord
82mm mortars
Avalaunchers (nitrogen powered artillery piece that uses compressed gas to shoot charges up to about 1 mile)
howizters
recoiless rifles

they mostly use the avalaunchers and hand charges around here... during big storms they'll use helicopters or road control work. one of the mountains here has a WW-II vintage howitzers

avalanches kill. guns and bombs make things safer by setting the avalanches off when the runout zones are clear rather than randomly when someone may be driving through the path

I'm like Wobblin on this. I'm actually shocked that the gov't loaned out the M119A1s, as I thought that these were the newer
105mm howitzers that the services were using. ISTR that these were issued out starting in the `90/91 timeframe. But looking it
up on the Net, I found mention that their service life is supposed to run out in `08, so I'm guessing that they have something
new coming down the pike.

I see they mentioned something about getting them something to replace the returned 119s, so maybe they'll dig some of the old 102s
or 101s out of mothballs, if they have any left that they haven't given out as aid to some Banana Republic at the expense of our wallets.......

They probably want them back due to their lightweight lift capability, etc. I hadn't heard that they were loaning howitzers out for
avalanche control. I've seen the recoilles rifles in action out west, and knew that's where they came from. Hmmmmmm.......

What they didn't say is that they are REALLY afraid those Howitzers may fall into terrorist rebel hands when they enact the Constitution Modernization Act of 2008.

Don't want to arm the subjects.

Constitution Modernization Act of 2008, WTF are you talking about Ben? This is some kind of joke, right?? Please give a link so I can read up on this. Thanks.
