So then, I am moving to Finland soon(long story I'd rather not go into). How is Finland? I know very little about it (other than where it is). I have been taking lessons for a couple days now in how to speak Finnish. How are gun laws? Governemnt in general? Are people as lawsuit happy as here? I'm sure I'll think of more questions, but this should start.
Thanks for any input.

People are not  lawsuit happy anywhere else but here in the states.

I believe Finlands gunlaws are pretty damned good. But damn why Finland? My family is Swedish and we give Fins a lot of shit. Hope you like your vodka and a lot of it!

You're in luck, there is someone on this board who is from Finland, but I haven't seen him post anything for a while. Anybody remember his handle so that you can drop him a line?

No koska ruottalaiset miehet o homoja...
hingsCheck out the finnish laws (= how to import a car and avoid taxes)
Car are pretty damn expensive, so why dont you buy one, move here and sell it (laws, you must buy car 6 months before, and cant sell it before you have owned it for 2 years...) You could probably sell it for175% in here.... Example: Daddy bought a car from Saudi arabia, (early 80s, nissan 280ZX), sold it 7 (200000 kms) years later, got 4 x what he paid for it, and bought a house.here
Tervetuloa!

Evil assaultweapons really easy get... Comblock guns dirt cheap, Bushmasters are just as expensive as in usa. Full auto legal, hard to get... Silencers legal, to paperwork, sold over the counter...

Am I reading this correctly?  No paperwork for full-auto and silencers?

Some info on Finland,

Finland is estimated to have the third most heavily armed population in the world, after the United States and Yemen.

Finland has the highest rate of gun ownership with 39 guns per 100 citizens

If I remember right, Finland is one of the few places in Europe were you can own a full auto assault rifle or machine gun. There is some paperwork, but its pretty minimal.  Stangely enough, most European countries, including Britain, have no problem with people fitting silencers to their guns! It's actually ENCOURAGED here in Britain to cut down on noise pollution…

As long as you accept registration, you can own any small arm you want.  Including full-auto.  All you have to do to justify owning a fully automatic weapon is say that you're a collector.

NO 'SMALL' PISTOLS. a ppk or makarov is too small to be legal (too easily concealed).

full auto is just like here...proper paperwork required.

sound suppressors are easier to get.

any machinegun with the fast parts pulled out is considered a semi-auto.

gasoline is 4x the price here.

taxes and insurance prices are as high or higher than here.

hunting moose, elk, deer requires testing by shooting at running target.

waterfowl hunting license requires written test (game identification).

learn about finnish "sisu".

You bastard!

Actually, I wonder if Finland's law gun-laws apply to visitors and permanent residents (assuming that's what you'll be) or if they are limited to Finns.  That might be worth looking into before yo plan on too many Sig 550 full-auto purchases.

The other thing that I'd want to think about ahead of time is hwo well you can deal with the really dark and long winter.  The days there, even in Southern Finland, are extremely short in the winter - so it can get really depressing - we're talking about a few hours of real daylight per day here.   It's not a conincidence that Scandinavia has the highest suicide rates in the world - it's the dark winter that does it.  So if you're prone to depression, you might want to think about that too (and bring some medication - or see a doctor there).  The Finns deal with it by drinking heavily (and I mean heavily!).  Of course you get the upside of it in the summer, where it doesn't relaly get dark at all in June.  I know I'm rambling on about this, but I think the dark winter is the thing that most foreigners would have the most trouble adjusting to.

On the upside, the Finns are some of the NICEST and friendliest people I've ever met.  Most Finnish women are not your super-hot Scandinavian tall blondes, so don't get your hopes up there - but the people really are excellent.

Good luck with the language!  It's probably the most difficult language in the world to lern as a foreigner - so don't feel bad if it's impossible.

Oh - and get used to being naked in the coed Sauna - and get used to the Sauna!

Here are some quotes from an (anti) gun article, about the whole world.  The article seems to have the idea that banning all guns would stop all world violence.

"United States and Russia accounting for more than 70 percent of production. The estimate of the legal small-arms trade - $4 billion a year - also remains the same, with the European Union dominating the international export market. "

"With roughly 83-96 guns per 100 people, the United States is approaching a statistical level of one gun per person.

The country with the second-highest gun ownership is Yemen, with between 33 and 50 firearms per 100 people, followed by Finland with 39 per 100, the survey said. "

"By comparison, the states of the European Union, now thought to have many more guns than previously estimated, have 17.4 guns per 100 people. "

"Surprisingly, even security-obsessed Israel has relatively few small arms. Private weapons appear to be carefully restricted. While Israel has at least 363,000 weapons in public hands, that equals about six civilian firearms per 100 citizens, or about 7.1 percent of the US figure. "

Yes they have higher gun ownership, but most of the guns belong to the military and are 'issued' or 'loaned'. Outside of the US, Finland is tops for privately owned guns.

Those stats are full of it. I know one fellow living in Orange County, CA had 3 huge safes, and each of one of them filled to the brim with various hand guns of all shapes & sizes. This is one guy that was truely affected by the one-gun a month BS in Kali-fornia since most of us couldn't afford to buy more than one hand gun a month anyways, but every month this guy would buy 2-3 guns.

No gas tube .223's are legal, however they take the gas tubes out before they get to us from the USA…posession of said gas tube will get you 7 years inside!!!

Semi-auto .22 AR's are legal though. V22 is a popular choice, DPMS Pre-ban M4/.22's are arriving now…
…But they cost @$1600.

Congradulations, you are the first on this board to notice; I was begining to wonder if any who spoke German cared enough to look. Meine was taken from comcast (where my email is from) so I went the the grammatically incorrect form.

As for winter, I love cold weather, and darkness does not bother me, neither does lots of vodka.

For the reason, it has to do with my girlfriend's family (her father lives in Finland, and is near the end). If it is nice there, I doubt we are going to leave, so I was wondering what the laws would be like if we stayed.

I found some statistics for racial diversity, and being an Austrian/Scot, I will be one of the dirtiest genetically.

Ich spreche Deutsches ziemlich gut, ich zeige es nicht am meisten. SCHLAMPE!(I'm kidding).

So what is there to do for fun in Finland? (other than the obvious of shoot guns, drink, and womanize)
