My minimal fancied up hawks.
No paint on the heads but some Russian grade shellac of sorts that was a pain to remove. One of the set screws was stripped and cross threaded...I just drilled it out. Sanded and tung oiled the wood, added a wipe down of that dark old English polish. Built a target board from scrap 2x6's and we are doing a hawk/axe throw cookout with family tomorrow. Attached File |

CS "spontoon" pipe hawk is here. I really want to try and make a "real" pipe hawk out of it.
Easily, the worst casting I've had so far from the CS tomahawks. One side of the tip required a good bit of file work to make it symmetrical, but it looks good now. I'm hoping that hammer "pipe bowl" isn't going to be too hard to drill out...and then there's figuring out a way to drill the handle... |

My trail hawk was waiting for me when I got home. Haven't really done anything with it yet. Been recuperating from the drive and the shitshow in between. The head looks okay at first blus, but is pretty loose on the handle. I'm guessing it'll take some work before it fits properly. I can honestly say I was unprepared for how long a 19" handle really is.
Now to decide what sort of decorations to apply. |

Where do you guys buy handles? I need something about 16" long that is around 1" x 3/4" oval or so.

I take an Eswing Tomahawk hunt/camping. One of these.
Easy to pack and small enough to roll up into my bed role... Not really the point for a ccw but still nice to have at a site. Attached File |

Very easy to come out the side doing these. I need a laser. |

I managed to get my trail hawk shaving sharp, to my surprise. Never sharpened an axe or hatchet before and my knife skills are just passable. I went to town with a file to thin the material directly behind the cutting edge before actually sharpening. It worked out well. Beveled the inside so it wouldnt chew up the handle and took a file to the handle to clean it up. I have a nice friction fit now.
I may cut off a couple inches to make it shorter, the whole thing is really heavier than I like. Cant swing it as fast as Id want to. Im debating cutting off the hammer to save some weight. Picked up a nice kydex sheath on ebay, now to figure out mounting options. |

View Quote Was yours dull when you got it? I was hoping for razor sharp, but came almost butter knife sharp. Been working on it with ceramic rods and its getting close to razor, just kind of annoying for a $600 tomahawk, the jenny wren just needed a little touch up to shave. Also wish I got those handles, sculpted maple is really nice, and grippy otherwise, but is too narrow and sharp edged for swinging it, creates multiple Hotspot. The Winklers are HEAVY, one thing though when you swing it it has the feeling it will go through anything. I did figure out why the lighter shorter hawks are for fighting, the Winkler is a lot slower, I could see a person having difficulty staying neutrally balanced after swinging it hard. The Jenny Wren still feels like it will split your skull, but is much more maneuverable and quick. Going to get that feather kestrel blackout they on sale now next. |

There's already a pretty good chunk of handle shave just from assembly. |
