Running XP,
my fucking mouse pointer (optical logitech mouse, btw) keeps flying all over the damn screen.  It goes to the start button and the close out "X" randomly (and often)  I don't know if it is software (since these are action buttons) or if its the mouse since these are in corners)
Driving me insane.
Help.
I really want to shoot my computer after the past few weeks.

Which mouse is it?

Is it cordless?

Is the mouse PS/2 connected, or USB?

Make sure you have the mouse on a good, textured, nonreflective surface. I've had some problems with people using Optical mice on glass, books, desktops and some hard and/or reflective mouse pads.

It causes the mouse to not track, and occasionally overtrack and jump to the extreme corners.

You may also want to check the connections to verify solid contact, as well as cleaning off the lens on the bottom of the mouse.

USB connected logitech optical with a PS Adaptor (so not connected directly to the USB port.)  I tried cleaning the mouse.
I will reverify the connections.
Thanks
Oh, and I can let go of the mouse and watch it track across my screen.
The surface is either wood or an actual mouse pad.

Check your speed settings and slow it down.  The speed setting is also the sensitivity and the sensitivity may be set too high.  Mine is hooked up the same way and I have had no problems out of it at a medium setting.

Make sure you don't have "smart mouse" enabled in your control panel (under Mouse). While you're in the control panel, also verify that speech commands are disabled under the regional and languages -> languages -> details. Even without a mic hooked up, interference can cause strange results.

You may also want to look at this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article about optical mice having problems.

You might try installing the drivers for the mouse also. I had mine get foobared once and it cuased all kinds of problems.

You can get the lastest drivers here.

By cleaning do you mean taking it apart and giving a thorough one? I use a USB optical mouse now, but
I experienced the same exact problems you described
only with a standard mouse. I opened it up and cleaned out about 3 years worth of crud, grime and God knows what. It fixed the problem right up.

Great, but for some reason I can't download the java script.
What now.
This is insane.
It isn't virus related, since I had the problem before I had to reformat my hard drive.
This thing is going to taste my FAL before this is over.

I was having a problem with my old logitech optical. When I would move it fast the mouse would lose its position and bounce around the screen usually it would look like it hit a wall in the middle and bounce back.  It was a problem with older optical mice, but the new logitechs supposidly don't have that problem.  I have their new one for gaming and it doesn't, but I am not sure if the whole line of them is the same since mine has tweeked optics supposidly.  I think the new thing is called mx technology.  It was a damn pain trying to figure out why it was doing that.  I kept playing desert combat and getting owned because I couldn't move the tanks turret fast enough.

This is either enemy action, i.e. you have some sort of backdoor script installed, or you should switch to decaf. See if the same weird shit happens when your computer is off-line. And I mean /physically/ disconnected from the Net. Pull the plug from your modem or network card.

PS: if this is any consolation for you, my PS/2 ports dropped dead without any warning, so I had to get USB-connected mouse and keyboard. Works now, but now during the boot process, the piece of shit hangs itself up when it tries to recognize the soundcard. Take out the soundcard (ISA), everything works fine, except the sound, obviously. Try another soundcard (PCI), computer hangs up before it even acknowledges the IDE drives. GAHHH!

1. start in safe mode - does the problem still exist?
2. Uninstall the Logitech driver and use the default windows driver.
3. Move the moue to a USB port.
4. Try an old mouse

If the first 3 don't work shitcan the mouse.
