OK, I think I got hit by some kind of virus.
When I boot my computer I get in a loop.  It goes to the Windows screen with the little bar, flashes a blue screen with text for a millisecond, then starts to boot again.  When i get to the screen that gives me the options of how I want to boot, I try all five and get the same outcome.  The computer simply will not load up windows.
I have a DOS boot disk that brings me to A>: and I can do the DOS dance for a while.  However, my MSDOS skills always did suck and I can't do much more than change directory, list files and type in exe programs.
Question #1, what is the exe file in Windows XP that initiates the boot sequence.
Question #2, how can I get into the windows enivornment through the C prompt without going through boot
Question #3, how do I find the file that poked me in the butt and kill it.
Thanks for the help (note, I typed this on a borrowed computer.)

I bet it says "NTLDR missing". Fetch your XP CD, boot from it, choose re-install first, then after a while, it will ask again, then choose repair.

What caused this?
Thanks for the help.
Now I just have to find my XP disk

What Kar98 said... repair your install. Your only other option is physically pull the drive out, and hang it off another XP system's IDE cable as a slave/secondary drive. Then you can run virus scanning against that physical drive from the host machine.

boot process for NT is :

power on self test --> load MBR --> find boot sector --> run a file called NTLDR --> run BOOT.INI (which tells the computer which partition your OS is located) --> run NTDETECT.COM (checks your hardware) --> then runs NTOSKERNEL.EXE (your operating system) among other things.

Yep, but that's the gist of it.

I've got no fucking idea, but it happened to a large enough number of people I know to realize it's not a fluke. Endless boot cycle, boot sequence aborting the same instance the BIOS tries to hand over to Windows.

No you don't have a virus, you are getting a blue screen memory dump. The reason why it reboots cause that's what the default is, reboot when finished of memory dump.

You have a hardware or software OS issue.

The first line is the most important.

It will give you a hex code and then a line right after that telling what failed.
It will be greek to you but if you could get these couple lines, you could look them up at microsofts knowledgebase.

For the record, DOS isn't going to help you here. The recovery console for 2000 and XP is what we use now.

The problem is the screen flashes so fast I can't read it.
I thought XP was dummy proof?[rolleyes]

Try to build something dummy-proof, and somebody will present an improved dummy. Besides, it's [i]"dummy-resistant"[/i].

It might be dummy proof, but if a piece of hardware goes tits up you're still going to have problems. If you're comfortable with it, pop the case on your PC and make sure everything, memory, peripherial cards, cables, etc. are seated properly. Do the repair option already suggested. Does it let you get far enough into the loading to F8 into safe mode? Threaten the little bastard POS box with death and destruction if it doesn't start working properly! [chair] [smash] [heavy] [pyro]

What's so funny? It works for me [:D]

Ok, another idea or 2 I got from Googling. Have you done anything to the computer lately? Changed or replaced any hardware? This could be related to a heat problem. Check to make sure processor and CPU fan are properly installed and seated. Any recent software installs? you might have a incomplete install mucking things up.

More info please. [:)]

About two months ago I installed a second hard drive and a DVD Burner.
I did leave the computer on for three days straight while I was dowloading a few things off emule.  I also downloaded a share-ware viewer.  Then I shut off the computer.  When I tried to start it up again, this shit started happening.  I rarely kept the computer on for more than 24 hours so the heat theory makes some sense.
Since I had downloaded four files (one an exe) since the last time I had turned it off, I assumed I ate a virus of some kind.
This appears to be software related, not hardware.

Self answering question....
Roll your system back to before you downloaded and installed this stuff, then do a "google" search on the crap you downloaded to see if it causes any "problems".

is your drive formatted in FAT32 or NTFS?

can you see your C:\Windows\ directory? if you can using your win98 disk your hard drive is formatted in FAT32.

you can then replace your kernel if it is corrupt. To replace the kernel, stick your XP instal disk into your cdrom drive and replace your kernel:

Type expand D:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

D = your CD rom drive
=====

if all else fails, reinstall windows over your existing installation.  afterwards, you will have to also reinstall your other programs like MS office.   DONT reformat during installation so you can save all your MP3 files and such.

I can't rollback anything.  I have zero access to my OS

Change your bios settings to boot from the XP CD, and then boot from the XP CD.

Once there, then roll it back.

Update,
I tried everything and I still had to reformat my C: drive.
This really pisses me off.  Mrs. Sylvan lost all her e-mail addresses.  She is less than happy (oh, and of course, she blames me)
Oh well.
