Ok, Im almost 18 years old and have a lot of decisions to make. I am planning on attending Ohio University in the fall, but also want to join the military either Ohio National Guard, or go ROTC and go active after college. What would you suggest?

I want to see the world because my travel has been very limited in my life and want to see other places than Southeast Ohio. I am either thinking Army or Navy, if you can give me some insights to which brance would be better for my career that I am planning on (teaching), it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I was in the Air Force, and attended Army and Marine Corps schools during my service. If you really want some advice, here's mine: concentrate on school for now. Don't do either ROTC (a joke, IMHO) or the Guard (you'll probably deploy before you're finished w/school). Get an education, get to know yourself better, and then, afterwards, if you STILL want to join the military, do so with a commission after college. They'll pay back a LARGE portion of your student loans, and you'll get a better education without having to divide your attention.

My .02 cents.

You are young, go ahead and go enlisted in the NG or full time.  It will help you in regular college and even more so if you strive to be an officer through ROTC or OCS.  Go enlisted in whatever interests you the most.

i would focus on college. I know people who are doing too much while in college and they are too stressed out.

I think you can join the military anytime after you graduate.

I would just go to school and not do either.
I thought about it also and now I'm glad I didn't.  I thought traveling and shooting guns was a dream and you get paid for it! Now I'm glad I didn't.  You can travel when you graduate college, took me 6 years to finally graduate.

Have you already been accepted?  If so, whatever you do, do it around OUs schedule.  Don't fuck up your opportunity.  Returning to school after some life experience is quite different from going directly from High School.  Unless money is a prohibiting factor, you may want to join after school.  If you have not been accepted, do whatever you want.

I believe if you are enrolled in college full time and in the guard you don't have to deploy.
ROTC isn't that much of a distractor.  Many guard's provide free tuition at state schools.
This is from the 2002 National Guard Almanac for Ohio.
100% scholarship for tuition at state supported college/university.

Going to basic training and AIT will help you with Freshman year with the added discipline.  Plus the extra bucks help.  Chicks dig military types these days.

My best friend recently joined the NG and I was planning on joining and maybe getting assigned to the same outfit as him. I guess I have this summer to get things straightend out.

The only reason I see is to pay for college.  There is no way in hell I would join after college.  Almost too old and you could find a great job making twice as much.  Them you can play army like me and travel on your own terms.

If you plan on graduationg from college then go officer and don't enlist, go with ROTC.

Of course you will get a good look at the "othe rside" of life and will have a better understanding of enlisted life if you enlist.

ROTC is a good deal. I got a two year scholarship which paid for everything. It was really nice to graduate with all my education paid. NG is good too but if you get called up you will have to leave in the middle of the semester. It happened to a few of my friends. You should ask yourself what you really want to do in the service. Talk to some people who are serving OTHER THAN RECRUITERS. Then make your choice.
