Ad-aware 6.0 is pretty decent and FREE.  I have also used spybot search and destry, however I like Ad-aware better

I use both Ad-Aware & SpyBot.

Sometimes one may catch what the other didn't.

Thanks guys.  I've got pop ups coming out my ass!  My home page changed and my IE search is gone.

Same here.  Both free, so what the hell?  Plus they both seem to miss a lot that the other can catch.

AD-AWARE 6.0

Ad Aware 6.0 is THE SHIT! It's completely free, and you can download updates for free with the push of a button. Updates are important as new Spyware surfaces every day. I looooovvvvveee that program!

Download it here: (don't click "click to buy", just "download now". It's free!)

If pop-ups are buggin' the hell outta you, also load Pop-Up Stopper. It's free and does a pretty good job, too.

That only works for 'benign' popups that come up while you're surfing...

Opera will not prevent spyware-enduced popups, as these launch themseves even when you're not on the Web...

Just be VERY careful with spybot... you can screw up a lot with it! It is pretty powerful, all around. Use the defaults, combined with ad-aware... and add zone alarm or another firewall... you'll be good to go.

Edit: Zone alarm has pop-up blockers now that work fairly well, it's a good idea to have the firewall anyway. My ISP has blockers, combined with those from Zone Alarm... pop-ups are very rare for me.

Also do a search for the Google Toolbar. It has a wonderful pop up stopper in it. Some say it is spyware itself but you can download a version that doesnt report back to Google and there is an option to turn that feature off. Ad  Aware and Spybot do not consider it spyware anyway.

Mozilla Firefox doesn't allow any pop-ups, ever, unless you go into the settings and specify that a site can pop up a new window.  It's the best browser out there.

I cleaned a bunch of stuff off of my computer, but I still don't have my original search engine back.  I think it was just the IE default.  How do I change it back?

Go thru a file search on your system drive, and look for anything that has HOST as file, and empty it. I'm not sure what happens if you delete it though. My children download a virus that put all of the search engine names into somthing called HOST. This file says specifies that your machine can't access any of internet sites.

Neither Adware nor Spybot will fix certain browser hijacks and other crap running on your system.  HighjackThis will let you cleanup what the others miss.

I have recently started using Mozilla www.mozilla.org and haven't seen a popup since. [:D]
