Hey guys,

One of my co-workers has a son that recently deployed to Iraq.  I'm not sure what unit he is with other than he recently deployed from Ft. Bragg.  Not sure if he is part of 82nd or one of the supporting units.

My co-worker asked me if there were certain items that a lot of GIs requested while over there.  I wasn't sure what to tell her.

So, any of you fellows that have been overseas (Afghanistan, Iraq) what were some items that you really needed but couldn't get?  Remember, these have to be items that can be sent by a mother to her son.  I would suppose some items like a good sunscreen, maybe a spare pair of sunglasses or anything else to fight the sun.

What kind of things did you really want/need but couldn't get?

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions, as I just want to do what I can to make someone else's time overseas a little bit better.

I would figure anything with Deet in it, since the sand flies are supposed to be horrible, and folks are catching some diseases from them.

There was a great thread on this a while back. I seem to remember baby wipes.

Anyways, I don't know what to tell you. But tell him our thoughts are with him.

baby wipes,
copenhagen or skoal,
aa batteries,
powdered drink mix,
jerkey, dowesnt matter what kind,
magazines, (to read)
sunscreen,
chapstick,
electric razor (i would trade just about anything i own here for on of the battery powerd ones)
lighter,
socks, with coushined soles, iuraq kills socks,
anything with deet in it,

keep im mind that theres alot of people who dont have acess to px`s (like my unit) and are dying for normal run of the mill convience items yall back at home can get from the party store.
another thing io wish i had is garlic powder.
the list goes on and on

o ya, those poplight things that you put the batteries in and stick to the wall,

my list will go on forever if i dont stop.

if you think sopmeone might have a use fot it go ahead and send it, with the number of people here someone will be happy to get it if the person you are sending it to tdoesnt have a use fot it.

lets see when I was there we had almost no px access, the one at BIAP I got to go to once before we redeployed to the USA, but what I wanted was bug repellent, gatorade powder, and electric razor or two cheap ones- they will get beat up in a hurry.  junk food is nice, easy cheese, trail mix, jerky-lots of jerky, socks are good, so are sunglasses.  for the sunglasses, make sure they have black lenses black frame and are conservatively styled since sometimes the chain of command gets anal about what you wear.  dont worry about cigarettes since they are dirt cheap out there($10 a carton for marbs)  but if he dips, send him lots of Cope or Skoal.  hell send him a log even if he doesnt, because he can trade for stuff with it. last thing, a few one use cameras- he'll want to take lots of pics.  I ran out of film too quickly.
and a few things of baby wipes never hurt either.

Guys,

Thanks so much!  I'll forward all the suggestions tomorrow at work!

I got to ask though, what are the baby wipes for?

If anyone else has any more suggestions, I would love to hear them.  It's kind of nice to do something small to make someone else's time over there a little bit better.
