Hello Gang, I ran into some money this past weekend and instead of buying ammo, mags, or anymore accessories, I have decided to buy a gunsafe. I know absolutely nothing about them, well other than the obvious. I would like to drawn on your experience in helping me make a decision on what to buy. Feel free to tell me what to look for and any other suggestions you might have. I only have 3 pistols, so I need to secure 16 long rifles/shotguns. The collection keeps growing, but this purchase will slow me down for a while. I do not plan to store any ammo in there, maybe just a few important papers, and some jewelry. I would like to keep it around $1000 if possible and I need to be able to move it downstairs on an appliance dolly with 4 guys. I think that pretty well sizes it up. Thanks, Eric "Echap" |
| My experience tells me that no matter how large of safe you get, it will be too small in a year or two! Other than that, you are fairly limited as to what you can get for 1K. You can get a nice 600+ lb Liberty safe for $900 +/- and remember that there is no sales tax on gunsafes so you can spend up to your full budget on the purchase price. |

They tried to pass a mandatory trigger lock law a few years ago. It failed, but a compromise bill passed which made all firearms security devices sales tax exempt in Washington St. Want to guess where I'm retiring to and buying the mother of all gunsafes in 3 years? |

I guess I'll be the Liberty advocate. Quality is top notch and they have lots of models and options to choose from. You may need to up your budget a little though. As mentioned above, get something bigger than what you think you need. As soon as that safe gets installed, you'll start thinking of stuff to put in it: cameras, camcorders, old pictures, documents. Plus the new guns you'll eventually buy (even though right now you think you won't). http://www.libertysafes.com |

Thanks guys. I also heard that Sam's club has gunsafes. Oh I see that Winchester is from Sam's. That one looks pretty good for $699.99? Does anyone have one of these? Are they any good? Also thanks for the vote for Liberty, but can you give me some fact's as to why and what to look out for? Please educate me with your experience. I plan to buy the biggest the one I can get into my basement. Thanks!!! Eric |

Sam's did not deliver it and he and I unloaded it from a full size pickup bed. They are heavy as hell and I had a hard time lowering that thing. I think we let it fall about 10 inches from the gound onto a pallet. Then we used a hand truck to place in in his house. Samuel |

Quoted: Also thanks for the vote for Liberty, but can you give me some fact's as to why and what to look out for? OK, stuff to look at: Door thickness? Body thickness? Bolt thickness? Number of active bolts? How many sides of the door have bolts? Lock protection from drilling? Fire rating (stated in X degrees for Y minutes) Are the shelves capable of different configurations? ULâ„¢ Residential Security Container certified? Cosmetic stuff that may or may not be important to you: Is the interior fully upholstered? Finish? Exterior hinges? Liberty just seemed to have the best balance between cost and quality. |

My neighbor has one and likes it. I looked at it and was impressed. The interior is very nice, all padded, you can do shelves or guns. The locking bolts move on the left side of the door. On the right (hinge) side, it has a thick metal lip that hooks onto the door frame when it's shut. Aside from saying that it's pretty, that's about all I can tell you that you can't find out on the page. These folks make the Winchester safe: http://www.granitesafe.com/home.html If you already have 16 guns, the Sam's safe might be too small for you. Not much room to grow.
