The slide and barrel are not made by S&W on this P99.  timeports P99 is all Walther.  S&W makes the SW99 and there was a limited run of 3000 .40 caliber P99's that had the slide and barrel made by S&W.  Timeports P99 is a 9mm and definately all German.  The reason there were 3000 "tops" made by S&W was that Germany was having a hard time keeping up with demand on the .40's and WaltherUSA wasn't going to get any .40's for 8 month's!  So they made a decision to have a few tops made here.  Who knows they may become collectors items some day.
One easy way to tell if it's all German is to look for the eagle over N proof mark.

I guess i stand corrected. From all of the literature i read on both the sw99 and the P99, i was under the impression that the frames were built by Walther and the slide was built by smith&wesson. live and learn.

Since the Walther PPK has been replaced by the P99 for god old 007, timeport is probably in front of a mirror with his P99 across his chest chanting "Bond, James Bond".

I was looking into the P99, it is a beautiful gun, but then I read in their 2000 catalog (page 3)

‘In 1999, another step was taken to bring the Walter name into the new millennium. Walther USA is now the sole, distribution and administrative center for Walther products in the United States’.

Guys, approach it (The new S&W and any partner of theirs) very carefully  

In 1993 Walther merged with Umarex Sportwaffen Gmbh & Co KG

OK, This is what happened.  Some of you may recall that Interarms use to be the importer of Walther products.  When the owner of Interarms passed on, Walther got out from Interarms.  Interarms did lousy job of promoting and distributing Walther products.  Umarex bought Walther back in 1998.  Umarex has also been supplying S&W with air guns for years.  Umarex has been a big air gun maker for a long time.  Anyway, the VP of S&W was at Umarex talking shop when they showed him the P99.  He didn't think much of it at the time, but after it hit the market in the U.S. he went back to Germany to strike a deal with them to replace the failing Sigma line.  Thus the SW99 was born.  The SW99 has a Walther frame with S&W made slide and barrel.  This cooperation started the ball rolling towards a distributer partnership.  Walther wanted to set up their own shop, but S&W was already here and had all the facilities to handle importing the Walther line.  Now I've been told that S&W does own a part of WaltherUSA.  But just a part, I believe around 30%.  Thus Germany has full control over what happens.  When S&W signed the deal, Walther came out and said they have no intension of signing the contract.  I'm sure it created some tension between the two companies.  I know at the Shot Show, Walther was showing that it had nothing to do with S&W and their decisions.  That WaltherUSA was its own company.  I know Kimber was doing this also.  S&W make the blanks for Kimber slides and maybe frames.

So there you have it.  Walther is too good of a company to get mixed up in what S&W did.  I will admit that I am bias.  I have a nice Walther collection of several of their models and love them all.

If Walther has distanced themselves from Smith, how come they are getting harder and harder to find, especially PPK's. Most distributors use the Smith/Walther connection excuse for it. I still think Walther is too close to Smith. I hope they can get away, actualy, I hope Smith pulls thier head out of thier ass!

I've been hearing they are hard to find, but I haven't had a problem.  In fact I saw two P99's and a PPK at the gun show today.  And this was a small gun show too.  It may be because they are selling so well.  I do know that they are revamping the PP series (PPK/S and PPK), at least those made here in the U.S.  Germany quit making the PP series pistols in 1999.
