Just want to make some things clear concerning what I said and continue part of the discussion.

Using my warped humor to make a point isn’t always the smartest move.

No lecture either - I’m sure you guys know this stuff.

I have to question the level of effort put into the assault if one 16 year old can "repel" a "SWAT team." Maybe they were trying to do a “touchy feely, group hug, Democratic, daddy is the Asst DA” type assault.

When I said the above, it was written as a smart ass comment regarding the tactical plan of the SWAT team.
The “level of effort” meant the SWAT team decided before the assault that the assault would be soft; IE any rounds out they would retreat, etc.  They weren’t prepared, nor had they a plan, for a shootout.  Just a guess, but there it is.  At lease I hope they had this type of plan, and just didn’t just haul ass at the first rounds.

I was not refering to the lack of ability, commitment, or skills of the SWAT team.  I substituted “level of effort” for “amount of force to use,” or something close to that.

I’m impressed the kid survived the gas and FBs.   I can see where the SCUBA helped with the gas.  Wonder how it helped with the FBs.  Maybe the tank protected him from the dynamic air pressure changes.  Bet he has at least one perforated ear drum, though.

I didn’t know the SWAT team didn’t even get to the house before being repelled.  Hmmm…  Maybe take another avenue of approach next time???   Pretty basic to me.    As in the suspect is in the NE corner, so approach the house from the SW.

So as a SWAG, the room the kid was in had two exits, if not more.  Had to - one for him to get in and out of, and another for him to shoot through.  We know that one was an exterior port, as they hit him with gas and Fbs a few times.  If the situation warranted a full assault, hit the door and the window simultaneously.  Just make sure you trust your shooters.  The bad guy can’t shoot in two directions at once.  Just depends on how much you want to get the bad guy (level of effort).

In regards to the first SWAT maneuver apparrently, they approached the house to planned woodpile where they would split up. The suspect opened up on the woodpile with a hail of bullets that penetrated the wood wounding three with wood chips. Enough that some of them were rushed to the hospital. Crossing the open ground wounded or not at that point would have meant taking rounds for sure. I think their decision to retire was sound. This wasn't combat where casualties are acceptable.

I hope this was their only cover.  A really bad choice.  They said they didn’t know there were guns in the house.  Seems like they would’ve checked before hand.

I’m starting to second guess them, which is foolish doing that from Texas.    So I’ll cut this short.

I give them - SWAT, LEO, and everyone involved - a salute for at least trying to talk the young man down and for modifying the plan when it was realized that weapons were a consideration.

Here's the original thread Backstop is referring to:

The above thread was started before a keyboard on the net was hit by myself located less than three miles from the incident.  Much of the detail in the above thread was from live TV reports broadcast if anything too often.

Isn't this something we've pretty much assumed all along?  Super duper SWAT guys rarely encounter resistance.  Most of the time the "bad guys" run, surrender immediately, or make furtive gestures with deadly cell phones in their hands and get waxed.  I mean, how often do you hear of a real, bona fide shootout between SWAT and someone (or more) armed and determined not to be arrested?  Seems when that happens, officers die.  Which is probably the reason they go in with a large show of force every time, to hopefully overwhelm the target.  But the fact is, they are not SEALS, they are not HRT, and they're not on a specials ops mission... and if someone shoots back shit's gonna happen (which is too bad).
