Reference was made in another thread to immunizing firearms & kids against the allure of the forbidden by allowing children supervised access to guns. I was raised that way. Touching a gun on my own (they were all over the house, and all loaded) was a hanging offense; however, if I awakened a grownup at 3 AM and asked to see a gun, it would without hesitation or question be retrieved, unloaded, and handed over to me to be examined, dry-fired, fondled, et c. for, quite literally, as long as it took for me to get bored. I did the same thing with my kids. The net result was that while I (obviously) remained interested in guns, they were approximately as alluring and enticing as a fancy stillson wrench or a garden hoe. Neither I nor my siblings ever thought about even looking at the guns without adult supervision. How many of you had the same experience growing up? How many have handled the issue the same way with your kids? |

I was the other way around. I am sure that the fact I still have my head intact is just an exception, but I've handled guns unsupervised since I was 14 years old. Granted, I accidentally found the gun (unloaded). It was a .22 Ruger SA. I managed to get cartridges, though, and shot the gun in the basement [:D]. And then I had a .22 and my older step brother had a .357 Ruger. I handled all of those guns unsupervised, but for some reasons, I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CAREFULL with them. I never pointed it toward myself, or toward anybody else. When I was 18, I bought a Mini-14 and the addiction continues ever since. And my mother have always thought that I was an angel. [:D] Had she known that I was playing with guns ever since I was 14, she'd blow the roof! When I have a son, I would do everything I could to prevent that kind of stuff from happening with him. I am lucky that I didn't blow my brains off. |

Quoted: Touching a gun on my own... ...was a hanging offense Your parents were limp wristed liberals. If I even looked at or thought about the word gun, there would have never been a trace of my body found. This is the exact way to raise a child with something so serious, desensitization. The kids you should be afraid of are the sheltered one who have never touched one. Just like the movies/its a toy. BANG! second, I think he means a 'child'. Yes there became a time when we were old enough to keep our rifles in our closet. 6 or 8 was not it. At 14 we could go squirrel hunting on autopilot, and when we werent there, they kinda knew where we were. |
