Ummm... am I blind?

This is the URL in the "fraudulent" email:
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run

and then PayPal replies stating, "The
website linked to this email is not a registered URL authorized or used by
PayPal., but then they tell you to go to:
https://www.paypal.com/

It looks like its the same site to me....

That link will take you somewhere else, even though it has the proper paypal address in it.

When I get these emails, I give them a BS credit card number, and a load of personal information for one "James T. Kirk".  [BD]

Yep, it's the equivalent of how the board code works for posting url's...

{url=http://www.ReallyBadCrackerSite.com}https://www.paypal.com{/url}

If you hover your pointer over the link, you should see the real link address in the  status bar of your email reader.

The link sent in the email is a hyperlink, not a copy-n-paste link. If you follow it you will be linked to something like [email protected] which is a site made to appear exactly like PayPal, only all the stuff you type into the username/password area will be archived for the badguys to see.

Gotcha-- that wasn't clearly represented in the original message.... I know what they are talking about now.

I got the same thing a little while ago.  Both the bad one and the reply from paypal.  Thought it was kind of odd to get the first one since I didn't have a paypal account!  Reported it and got the same thing back you guys saw.

Any email like this spends .5 seconds in my inbox before I delete it.  I fail to see why anybody spends any time on these.  Like I've said if you fall for something like this "You is dumb"
