I have nextel for work.  If I didn't need the radio for my work, I wouldn't have it, but I do so there it is.

The battery on my current phone is dying, and costs $50 to replace.  I went on their website, and found out that one of their new flip phones is only $150 after rebate, so basically for $100 I can get a new phone.  Stopped in the Nextel store today to see if it was smaller, and sure enough, it's just as thick as mine, but smaller in the vertical dimension.
Cool right?  oh hell fuck no.  The little pimply jerk tells me that in order for me to get that phone for the $225/$150, I have to sign a two year agreement, AND pay a $35 "upgrade" charge!  WTF?  Does this sound correct to anyone else?

Yep that is the way it goes.  The low price is just a teaser to get new customers.  If a current customers want to upgrade or replace a lost or damaged phone expect to bend over.

It's getting to the point that the convenience of the radio for work may not be worth it anymore.

nextel has always been expensive..
if u decide to go through with a two year plan, try letstalk.com. Theyre selling the newest i730 (its actually pretty slim for once) 25 bucks after mail in rebates. Cheapest ive seen around. I hate two year plans though...so u might wanna try negotiating with local dealers.

Those letstalk.com cock-heads are the ones that sold me the phone I have now.  Good luck collecting any rebates from thost assholes.

Since getting a Nextel several years ago, I almost never dial a phone number anymore.
Everyone I communicate with is on my direct connect.

Yes, NEXTEL fucks existing customers when they want to upgrade...all of the deals are for "new users".

BUT...ALAS You do not have to get your phone from NEXTEL, and you can have your service activated elsewhere...without lengthy contracts.
There is a website that sells NEXTEL phones and service on the cheap, but I dont have it handy right now.
A guy from work showed it to me, I will track it down for you in the next couple of days.
