Last I checked, belly dancing is not a big thing in South America.

Not sure how that somehow negates her being fully Latina.

But, these conversations on here are always filled with fascinating insight on how people see the world.

Because she's not fully Hispanic. Her paternal grandparents were both Lebanese and her father was born in NYC.

Didn't you notice all of the Middle Eastern 'cues' in her routine?

Born and raised in Colombia is pretty “Latina” (even though I loathe that term) in my book, regardless of genetics.

My take as well.

Lots of different groups have migrated over the years to Latin American countries, all sorts of Lebanese in particular. I guess a valid question might be what language her parents spoke at home.

Regardless, everywhere she went, Spanish was the language in daily use. That culture was the immersive and dominant environment. Ergo, “Latina” fits.

I dated a gal from Argentina of British ancestry. She had the pithy English accent, lived in London, and was a huge West Ham fan. Culturally, she was very hispanic, and Spanish was probably her most comfortable language. We had a ball in Mexico, because everyone assumed she didn’t speak Spanish.

Shakira is half Lebanese, one quarter Spanish, and one quarter Italian. She was born to a Colombian mother of Catalan and Italian descent, Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado, and a Lebanese father, William Mebarak Chadid, in Barranquilla, Colombia, where she says she grew up among the Lebanese and Italian communities.

I guess it boils down to whether you consider “Latino” to be a racial thing or a cultural thing. You clearly lean  toward the former, while I lean toward the latter.  To me, the origins of her parents means nothing at all. They could be pure Irish, and I’d still lean toward calling anyone born and raised in Colombia “Latino”.

(The real Latins were Italian, but I guess that doesn’t count... just like my high school guidance counselor told me being Spanish (at least according to Spain) didn’t make me eligible for “Hispanic” scholarships.

I grew up in Los Angeles from the mid 60s and I’ve lived in Miami for the past 35 years, but no...I haven’t noticed that.

Now, to be fair, I have a Lebanese friend who says there’s a large contingent of Lebanese ex-pats in Caracas, where his sister resides and his wife grew up, so who knows these days?

The only reason, the NFL had both Shakers Shakira and J Lopez as their half time show was to gain Hispanic followers.

Look at the numbers of all three of their followers on social media.

NFL is lacking so they paid for influencers.
