Does anyone know much about parkerizing. I've seen some kits online for it and was thinking about doing it to my mossberg 500, wich is currently blued. What would I have to do to prep my gun for it, has anyone tried this. thanks

I parkerized three pistol frames recently using the home parkerizing kit.

I thought that it turned out pretty well. One pistol was supposed to be the grey Milspec look. The other two were a base coat for Teflon/Moly, bake-onspray finish. It was easy to do for a pistol frame.

I think it would be difficult to do on shotgun barrel with a home kit unless you had a long metal container and multiple heat sources (as opposed to the steel pot/hotplate setup I used on the pistol frames).

On my Mossberg, I had to refinish the barrel after silver soldering a ramp for the front site. I used Brownell's Teflon/Moly matte black and it came out looking fabulous.

It isn't really a "Do It Yourself" project.

I would recommend sending it to Lauer if you really want to have it parked.  I have the stuff, but the lead time is long, as it is a long setup for a single run.

For a shotgun, Lauer lists $125 for parkerizing, plus an assembly/cleaning charge.

I had Pro-Tech Engineering down in Illinois parkerize a pump shotgun for me and it really turned out well---I am pleased with the result----and no longer quite so worried about rust resulting from heavy, hard use of the firearm.

Parkerizing, from what I understand, can either be gray (zinc phosphate) or black (manganese phosphate).
