I am looking for a Mini DV camcorder in the "matchbox" body style. Something similar to this:

Actually, I really like the camera pictured above, the Canon Elura 50.

Here are my requirements:

1. Small size, the smaller the better
2. Inexpensive batteries (generic are fine)
3. Color viewfinder (I plan on using viewfinder to save battery power)
4. Firewire
5. Image stabilizer
6. Night shooting mode

I don't want to spend more than $550 for the cam and a couple of extra batteries.

If you do get the camera you have pictured or another one capable of adding filters and lenses the first thing you should seriously look at buying is a UV filter. They are cheap and serve mostly to protect the lense from scratchs. If you scratch a UV filter you are out only 10+ dollars but if you scratch the lense you are hurting.

An imported thing about reviewing camcorders is to ignore digital zoom. In fact you will want to disable it.

Yeah, I don't get the fascination with 400x digital zoom. I guess some people like to reduce their image to a pixel mosaic. [lol]

Thanks for links guys!

Is Sony still the only one offering the nightshot feature?  That would narrow down the choices.

No, it is just what Sony calls this feature. Many other DV camcorders can also record in low light conditions.

I love my Sony TRV22.

It's about the size of your hand.

The picture it takes is awesome.

I'm very happy with everything about this model.

it cost around $550.00

Good luck!
