from a purple heart award ceremony. I posted a thread abou these guys before, but just being there and talking to them makes me proud to serve with these guys. Three guys from our battalion got the purple heart today. There were four people in the back of the HMMWV they were patrolling in near Falluja, Iraq. When they were hit by the IED (chinese artillery warhead) one guy was literally cut in half. One sustained shrapnel to his arm. He is getting out to go to college in a couple months. One guy who had just arrived in the unit a couple weeks prior to the deployment had a 5" piece of shrapnel in his thigh. This guy got blown out of the HMMWV and was set on fire(his SAW rounds were going off on his armor). Now that he is recovered, he has volunteered to go back to Iraq. The third guy got his left leg blown off just below the knee. He is making a trip down to Walter Reed next week to be fitted for a special prosthetic leg... so he can stay in the 82nd AND STILL JUMP OUT OF AIRPLANES. Anyone who has done it knows that military static line parachuting is no fun. Like it's been stated in the thread about SF customers... in the military you meet some of the best people you will ever know. |
