It seems like lately, the general public have shifted further to the right on gun issues. Is it because of 9/11? Or because I've been out of (and away from) college for a few years? Or because the internet allows us to see the big picture, where 10 years ago we had to depend on the media for news/info? Or are Americans just pulling their heads out of the sand? |

Well, here's what I see... The nation is sick of gun control and 'feel good' laws. They want to see results, not more rules that don't work. There are a few exceptions, CA, NY, NJ, MD, etc are all out of the mainstream on EVERY issue. Not suprisingly, these liberal-dominated states (the US is a center-right country, just compare us to Canada, Europe, etc) follow the liberal line on gun control. If you look at the trend in CCW laws, and the fact that Congress has blocked over 10 (iirc) different attempts to renew the AWB, and then realize that gun control is off the agenda list for both parties (save a few old fogies from the aforementioned liberal holdouts), and you see that the tide is indeed turning... Add the implosion of the Dems, and we get a nice bright future, with the possibility of Bush loading up the courts with strict constructionalist judges, thus producing the only way to whittle down past damage (by striking down the various laws) Color me an optomist, but with the exception of the loony-left states, the country seems to be getting MORE conservative... |
| Seems like part of it is the AWB and the Waco incident. Notice no major gun control law was passed after '94 (save for Clinton's EO's banning various imported guns). September 11th is also part of it too. More people join the military and gaurd and get exposed to firearms and seeing they aren't that bad. Also with families deployed the remaining family members become targets for criminals and they must defend themselves. |
