Ok guys I have a problem here. I downloaded a program called BC Wipe to clean my hard drive and it took some DLL files with it and now the computer starts up and shuts right down. I figure no problem and I will just reformat and reload XP. I pop my 98 start up disk in it and it says I can't format the drive. I go to the Dell doumentation and I attempt to repair the operating system. It appears to be relaoding all the files but when it finishes up and restarts it again shuts right down.

Any suggestions as to how I can reload the OS?

Thanks for looks and input...Rick

Where is your XP disk?

Why would you try to reboot XP with a 98 disk?

I didn't know XP had a floppy boot up disk.

It dosen't, you can boot from the CD.

Do you still have the CD?

Dredd...I have the CD and I used the repair optin to reload the OS. It loaded over a 30 minute period and and then it re-booted and then shut down again. Subsequent starts were the same. Windows starts and then shuts down and it tell me it is missing the DLL files

If the repair didn't work you might have to reinstall the OS.

1. Boot from the XP CD
2. Do not do a repair, do a fresh install
3. Your master boot record may be hosed, I would pull off all the partitions on the disk, and create a new NTFS partition
4. Reinstall the OS
5. Yes, you will lose everything if you do this.

If you really must recover some files, go get Ghost and do a backup of your drive to another PC before you do this.  You can browse the Ghost image and recover any crucial files.
