I need a server for heavy database usage, and I'd like some opinions from people who arent trying to sell me something. ;-)

Actually I will be storing, retrieving, and deleting say 10 gigs of tif files a day, feeding and reading 10 files a second at 50k apiece all day.

Needs to be big fast, and most of all reliable.
We cannot have even one file corrupted.

Thoughts between a Win 2003 server and say a Dell PowerVault 770N NAS?

This is for my office at http://www.pfainc.com/welcome.html

Thanks in advance.

Well, I can tell you, that I would not go with a Power Vault product, we did and had extensive problems, esp support from dell.

Windows Server 2003 would probably be a good choice.

An HP/Compaq SAN solution is what I would suggest with what info you have provided.

IBM RISC P Series
Shamless plug since this is what i service for a living [:D]

A regatta system should do you very well. The SUN killer is a serious BEAST

32 1.7ghz risc processors
512gb ram
up to 32 LPARS
Service processor
up to 160 hot-plug PCI and PCI-X slots, hot-plug redundant power supplies and cooling fans, and Dynamic Processor Deallocation

It's nice living on the bleeding edge [:D]

Seriously if reliability and stability is your main concern a microsoft based machine should be off your consideration list.

I have said it before and will say it again. NO DELL

If you must go microsoft i'd look into some of the IBM netfinity systems. Well made, stable, and the best support and service in the industry.

Thanks for the input, I'm looking into this for my boss. When we can't find things out ourselves he asks me and my friend here at work.
We then go to the forums. He thinks we're genius'!

I feel like Scotty on Star Trek. :D
